Back to school

Last week, I went back-to-school shopping with my 8-year-old daughter. It was like stepping into a hot tub time machine.

I was totally back in the '80s. Rockin' bright colors, gnarly plaids and bodacious skinny jeans and ties were everywhere.

My ginormous, curly hair felt right at home at UP Mall.

My daughter ended up with the outfit on the right from Justice. Image from http://www.shopjustice.com

The one and only store my daughter wanted to walk through was Justice.

"Plaid and Scottie dogs!" I said, nearly jumping up and down in excitement when I spied in the ensemble.

"I hate plaid," my daughter grumbled.

"Hate plaid?!" I said, disbelief ringing in my voice. "How can you hate plaid? Our Scottish ancestors would be appalled!"

She rolled her eyes and walked away.

"OK, so what do you like?" I asked.

Here's the dog shirt I liked from Justice. www.shopjustice.com

When will I ever learn that's the wrong question to ask to a young girl?

We spent the next few hours -- and many stores later -- picking through what she liked -- blingy jewelry, mood jewelry, sparkly clothes, military jackets, ripped jeans, froufrou skirts paired with leggings, animal prints and lots of neon-colored anything.

I think the girl was channeling Cindy Lauper.

It was a totally tubular experience even if she didn't get all of my '80s references.

All I can say is thank God, that in this retro trend, another generation of kids didn't like ruin their speak with Valley  -- gag me with a spoon -- that would be so way uncool.

I’ve seen so many trees down or shredded or blown apart or uprooted. I’ve seen them all over town. I’ve seen them on streets, on cars, on houses, on garages, on fences.
