Sorority has new officers, pledges

Jill Mueller hosted the meeting of Eta Mu Chapter of Delta Theta Tau June 23 at 6 p.m.

The members began the evening with a dinner of haystacks and other goodies.

The chapter pledged new members that evening. Cara Tuttle, fair committee chairwoman, handed out the fair schedules. The budget and committee lists were also handed out for 2008-2009. Discussion on the national convention legislation was held.

The next meeting will be Aug. 25 at the home of Sharon Miller at 7 p.m.

New officers for the philanthropic sorority were also installed.

The slate of officers, along with other members of Delta Theta Tau, will be selling admission tickets to the Elkhart County 4-H Fair.

They usually put in 40 hours or more on this project. They have been manning fair booths for more than 40 years.

They will also be volunteering to help with the Park and Recreation Department’s triathalon Saturday. The Delts also plant and take care of the war memorial at the Elkhart County Courthouse for the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

They will also host Octoberfest Oct. 18 at the VFW. The money earned will go toward the upkeep of the memorial. The ladies will also be hosting their province convention in October for the local chapters in Indiana.

Hosting style shows and selling Nelson’s Golden Glo tickets and other money makers help them earn money for their medical scholarship, which is awarded in the spring.

Anyone going into the medical field is eligible.

The group also helps support the Boys & Girls Club, The Window, Ryan’s Place, Faith Mission and local churches for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. The group is also in contact with local schools and is willing to help if needed.

The national convention is being held on Sanibel Island, Fla., through Sunday. Kathy Kauffman, Sharon Miller and Jill Mueller are attending.

Muller holds a national office of Eastern Counselor. With this responsibility, she visits other chapters in the area to help guide the members and answer questions they might have on running the chapter. She will be running for the same office next year.

On the national level of Delta Theta Tau, there are 110 chapters around the nation. There will be 300 to 400 members at the national convention.

Last year, the chapters gave $500,000 to charities around the country. The national group also gives scholarships for continuing education for guidance counseling. Anyone is eligible to apply for these scholarships.
