Red Hat

On Dec. 3, the Millersburg Chatter Hatters met at Dandinos in Goshen. The hostess was Sandy Bartoe. There were eight members present and each brought a wrapped Christmas ornament to share.

Then on Jan. 9, the Hatters went to Varns Guest House in Middlebury for High Tea. The hostess was Phyllis Hart and there were nine present. Connie Bickel was the winner of the name tag contest and the loser gets to play a tune on her Kazoo for the club in February.

Monday, Feb. 11, is the next get together at the China Dragon in Ligonier.

Friends & Neighbors

A total of 11 members of the Friends & Neighbors Extension Club met at the home of Marlys Prough in Syracuse.

Norma Schrock, president, opened the meeting with the club creed. Roll call was answered to: “Where would you like to be this winter?”, followed by the inspirational thought given by Karen Troyer — “The Character of God.”

The minutes and treasurer’s reports were read and accepted.

The door prize, a winter basket with a collection of seasonal items was won by Norma Schrock.

The Health Report was given by Marlys Prough, and featured a Prevention Magazine article on healthy diet and exercise, and a reminder to be polite to self and treat yourself well to be well.

The song of the month was Auld Lang Syne.

Business notes were read and passed on to club members.

Reminders: officers training is scheduled for June 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Home & Family Arts Building. This information was pertinent as new officers were elected for next year’s club. Also, the Heritage Skills Workshop is scheduled for Feb. 16. Call the Extension office to register.

The lesson was presented by Karen Troyer — “Cleaning Smarter, Not Harder.” Very extensive and helpful information was presented. Some of the highlights included: in order to not become overwhelmed with housecleaning, pick up things daily as this is a discipline that can take time to build into your routine. Prepare a cleaning plan — daily, weekly, monthly. Organize jobs into these categories based on need. For example, daily might include: sweep floor, wiping down counters, empty garbage. Weekly might include: clean out refrigerator, clean garbage pail, clean floor. Monthly or as needed might include: clean out cabinets and drawers, clean walls and woodwork.

Choosing the best cleaning products should be based on a three-step process: read labels for multi-task, check what surfaces it can be used on, used for what cleaning needs.

The meeting concluded with an array of delicious foods provided by the hostess and co-hostess.

Next meeting scheduled for Feb. 7 at the home of Marla Carlson with the lesson “Women’s Financial Do’s and Don’ts.”



Exchange Club

The Exchange Club of Elkhart County met on Jan. 15 at Oaklawn in Goshen. The meeting was opened by president Dave Parsons who called on Moe Miller to lead in a prayer. Tom Lind lead in the pledge to the flag and received the Handshake award. Rick Rupp was given the attendance drawing and Joe Stevens served as Finemaster.

The speaker was Jim Smith, executive director of the Pumpkin Vine Nature Trail, who showed a video program of the Nature trail and plans to complete the entire route from Goshen to Shipshewana.

The club will meet on Tuesday at 6 a.m. at Oaklawn in Goshen when Rachael Parsons will give a program on her mission work in South America. The public is invited to the meetings.
