What is Jesus really saying to us?

— Neither the Republicans nor Democrats have a corner on virtue. However, it has been estimated that as many as 70 percent of evangelical Christians voted Republican, citing Biblical principles. One wonders where Biblical principles are when Republican-controlled legislatures in several states have passed voter suppression laws aimed primarily at minorities, the elderly and students.

Evangelical Christians claim to be pro-life yet say little about eliminating poverty, working for peace or health care for all, all of which are pro-life issues and Biblical principles. Evangelical Christians are often in the forefront in opposing gender equality when Jesus teaches that all people are people of worth and all are to be treated justly. Evangelical Christians are strangely silent when Republican candidates make ill-informed comments about rape.

Biblical principles are more than abortion and gay marriage. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality but had much to say about how we treat the poor, make peace and heal the sick. Why is it that evangelical Christians say little about what Jesus says so much, and say much about what Jesus says so little?
