Ever wonder why our country is more than $16 trillion in debt? The headline reads “Illegal aliens will receive billions from the IRS this year.” The Inspector General reports that tax payments to illegal aliens have quadrupled in five years. They receive these payments in the form of the so-called “earned income child tax credit” even though they are ineligible to work in the country.
In May 2012, the Senate majority leader blocked a move to bring the Child Tax Credit Integrity Preservation Act to the floor for discussion and a vote. By doing so, he assured that those working in this country illegally would continue to receive billions of dollars in tax refunds for children that might not even live in our country. The President still talks about closing loopholes, but apparently this one is not on his radar screen.
The illegals that work in this country without a social security number file tax returns using their ITIN (individual taxpayer identification number). A recent audit showed 72 percent of tax returns filed by those using the ITIN claimed the child tax credit. The numbers are eye-opening — $4.2 billion in 2010, $5.6 billion in 2011 and $7.4 billion in 2012. The Inspector General recommended that the IRS require those claiming this credit to prove that they are eligible to work here legally. The IRS claims they have no authority to ask for such proof.
So, for the time being, illegal aliens will continue to get billions in tax refunds for not only their own children but in many cases for their nieces and nephews who still live in other countries.
And then, to top it off, Indiana’s legislature thinks it’s a good idea to give illegals in-state tuition. What a great country we have for illegal aliens.
