READER POINT OF VIEW: Kubacki says there's no room for hate at Statehouse

---- — I would like to thank my family for giving me such support and strength through this most despicable (Indiana District 22 Representative) campaign. They have had to endure the barrage of spiteful and hateful letters to the editor. My family members wanted to respond. It was my mother who objected. She may have been a migrant worker, but she set very high standards for the Espinoza family. The Espinozas take the high road. I could not be more proud of how the Espinoza family has shown such dignity and grace.

I want to especially thank my daughter for the beautiful letter she wrote about me. She wrote it from her heart and I love her for it. To have hateful (District 22 challenger Curt) Nisly supporters write to the editor with vicious attacks on my child is nothing short of evil. Mr. Nisly says that going after my voting record is fair game. What vote did my daughter ever cast that they should go after?

I want to thank my mother who worked so hard so her children could achieve the American Dream. There was a time in this country when if you worked hard and made something of yourself it was admired. To have her read in the local paper that her daughter is being called a migrant worker who has become arrogant or referenced by the phrase “Hot Tamale” by Monica Boyer (an Indiana Tea Party leader) on Facebook is despicable. I don’t care how you try to spin it, it is what it is. To have to be mocked by Boyer as the so-called “mother of Indiana” is just as despicable. Is standing up to keep children safe when they are in daycare facilities — so parents will never have to receive the phone call 20 other parents received, telling them that their child has died at the daycare facility — reason to replace me?

Something very ugly began to happen in my community the minute my opponent, Mr. Nisley, entered the race. The atmosphere changed for the worse. I watch the news and see nothing but hate. I listen to the radio and it’s the same thing. The message of hate is out of control. Members of Mr. Nisly’s team talk about purifying the party. Mr. Nisly has been endorsed by the Gun Owners of America, of which he is very proud. Please check out the website of this organization (https://gunowners.org/) and the executive director’s affiliations. It is shocking. What is even more shocking is the fact that Mr. Nisly refused to disassociate himself from the group. I am a member of the National Rifle Association and am proud that even they have distanced themselves from the Gun Owners of America because of their radical views.

We must put a stop to the pervasive attitude of I am right and you are wrong. We have to work together to get things done. There is no room in our district or state government to be hateful. That is not who we are.

Rebecca Kubacki is the incumbent representative in Indiana District 22, which includes Kosciusko County and parts of Elkhart County. She resides in Syracuse.
