We recently attended a free family event sponsored by the local VFW that provided food, prizes, a police canine demonstration and an opportunity for kids to interact with emergency personnel. During the event, members demonstrated a flag folding like those used in military funerals; and they also read the tradition or “significance” behind each of the thirteen folds.
We found the true meaning of the flag folding refreshing in this politically correct climate. I must warn you… this may be shocking. I will paraphrase: The first fold is for the symbol of life. Second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The third fold is in honor and remembrance of our veterans. The fourth represents our “weaker nature” and our trust in God. Fifth, right or wrong, we should always respect this great country. Sixth is where our hearts lie, for it is with our heart we pledge our allegiance to the Flag.
The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces. Number eight is for one who enters the shadow of death, so that we may see the light of day. Ninth is a tribute to womanhood and mothers, and how their love, loyalty, devotion and character have made this country great. Tenth a tribute to our fathers. Eleventh glorifies the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The twelfth fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians’ eyes, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The thirteenth fold if for our nation’s motto, “in God we trust.”
In closing, we would like to especially thank Orv Meyer for his hospitality. We appreciate and respect the work of our fire, police and ambulance responders. We also cannot express enough appreciation for our veterans, who have sacrificed so much for our freedom. U.S.A. In God we trust!
