Taxes aren’t a four-letter word

— Thanks, Mayor Kauffman and City Council, for keeping garbage pickup a tax-supported service. We don’t need the bother of another monthly bill. I’d rather have an equivalent tax increase than a separate fee for garbage collection.

I don’t know why the word taxes has become a swear word in American politics. Taxes are an efficient and fair way of securing needed services, such as police and fire protection, road construction and maintenance and the like. Maybe grumbling anti-tax Americans should experience what a society would be like without taxes and without the services our taxes provide. It might make us grateful for taxes rather than to indulge in knee-jerk opposition to taxes.
