Republican Party goes too far

— An open letter to U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski:

I write to let you know how disappointed — make that disgusted — I am with you and the Republican party for forcing a shutdown of the government. It was irresponsible in 1995-96 and even more so today with an economy struggling to recover from recession.

I know you don’t like the Affordable Care Act. Many Americans agree with you. But it is the law. It was legally passed by Congress, signed by the President and even survived a constitutional challenge in the Supreme Court. It was a major issue in the 2012 campaign and President Obama won re-election decisively.

If you don’t like a law you work to get a majority in both houses of Congress and move to repeal it. You do NOT shut down the government.

It breaks my heart to see what’s happened to the Republican Party I grew up with, the party of President Eisenhower, Sen. Everett Dirksen, Presidents Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, Dr. Otis Bowen and Sen. Richard Lugar.

Then it was a party of intelligent conservatism, principled opposition and willingness to compromise for the greater good of the county. It was a party that knew how to govern. Today’s Republican Party reminds me of the left-wing radicals of the 60s and 70s whose only aim seemed to be destroying the government.

The current Republican Party must be voted out of office.

I can and will work as hard as I possibly can here in Kosciusko County over the next 13 months to make sure Indiana’s Second District is represented by a Democrat in the next Congress.

Nothing personal, Mrs. Walorski, but I do not feel you have earned my trust. And you certainly have not earned another term in the U.S. House of Representatives.
