LETTERS FOR FEB. 20, 2014: Finding common good in Goshen

When an organization undertakes a special endeavor, it can be easy to focus on the organizational effort, satisfaction and accomplishments, and forget that not all may agree on the learning that is sought. Currently, there is great satisfaction in knowing that community policing presentations are bringing together groups such as the Community Relations Commission of Goshen, Latino Protestant Congregations, Catholic church, Goshen Police Department, and Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department for learning and community collaboration.

Latinos and other racial/ethnic groups who have attended a policing presentation are obtaining a greater understanding of how our law enforcement officials enforce Indiana laws; participants are expressing their experiences when they encounter a situation that requires police intervention. People are learning how to report a crime, and small but growing signs of trust are being observed between local law enforcement officials and the Latino community.

As Bienvenido Community Solutions strives to be an educational, learning organization, it acknowledges that differing points of view will be expressed regarding its specific endeavors. Both the critical and affirming points of view related to community policing presentations afford us the opportunity to listen for what needs to be improved and continued.

Through the above endeavor Bienvenido Community Solutions and its partners will keep working to find the common good in all Goshen residents. May we all strive to be an uncommonly great community that promotes collaboration and learning.

Obamacare must be stopped

Republicans should do everything they can to stop Obamacare. They must support S. 1726 and H.R. 3541 — The Obamacare Taxpayer Bailout Prevention Act.

This is the United States of America. Should we wait six months for a hip replacement? I think not.
