Letter carriers collect 80,170 pounds of food

The May 2008 National Association of Letter Carriers Local 547 Food Drive is complete with the collection of over 80,170 pounds of food, thanks to the generosity of our Elkhart County postal patrons.

The city carriers at Goshen, Elkhart, Nappanee and Bristol could not have done this without the support of the rural carriers, postal clerks, U.S. Postal Service, United Way of Elkhart County and Martin’s Supermarkets and the coordination of the event by the United Labor Agency for Community Services.

The 15th annual largest national one-day food drive will benefit and help restock the shelves at The Window, Elkhart and Goshen Salvation Army, Council on Aging, Faith Mission, Church Community Services, Guidance Ministries, Susanne’s Kitchen and the Harvest Basket Food Program at the United Labor Agency for Community Services.

This was a tremendous outpouring of generosity during these tough economic times of high gas and food prices and uncertainty in our workplaces. It’s the thought of hoping you don’t have to fill your gas tank and grocery shop in the same day.

This event proves again that our postal patrons are truly caring individuals toward our Elkhart County food pantries and those they serve.
