Public should fight teacher cuts

This letter is being written to inform all who live in or around the Wa-Nee community. In recent weeks there has been speculation of possible cuts in teachers and programs.
Recently 13 teachers received pink slips. In doing this, it will create larger classrooms next year and cause children that need help to fall through the cracks. Programs that they are proposing to cut are elementary physical education, music, and art. Also, middle school health and fine arts. At the high school level cutting classes in foreign language, art, and business.
All of this cutting is due the loss of enrollment of 41 students. The superintendent and school board want to be able to run on an 8 percent balance in their bank account, which equals about one month of funding.
I feel as a parent of a student in the Wa-Nee School District that it is not fair to my child or the other students to cut this programs. What about the “No Child Left Behind Act” or the obesity of our children? Is all of this about money and not the students?
In closing, it is time for the community to step up and fight the superintendent and the school board. Call a board member and voice your concerns.
