LIGONIER, Ind. — Christine Mershman of rural Topeka bested Ligonier resident Margarita White for the Perry Tonwship seat on the West Noble School Board Tuesday.
“I feel like it’s definitely going to be a learning experience,” Mershman said. “I have a lot to learn.”
Mershman said she didn’t know which way the election would go. White had name recognition from when she ran for mayor last year, and she’s very active in the community. “Margarita does a lot in the community,” Mershman said. “She’s done a lot of different programs that are important.”
And Mershman sees serving on the school board as her chance to serve the community.
“This school has unique issues,” she said. “I hope we can plug away, stay positive and find a way to make it work. The education of our kids is what’s going to improve our community.”
The other two school board seats that were up for election were uncontested. Gregory Cox of Ligonier will retain his District 4 seat. And Ligonier resident Jeana Leamon will serve District 5.
