A STAFF REPORT
THE GOSHEN NEWS
The Charleston, S.C., duo of Michael Trent and Carrie Anne Hearst — collectively Shovels & Rope — will be in concert the night of Nov. 10 at Ignition Garage, 120 E. Washington St., Goshen.
Shovels & Rope have been performing relentlessly over the last two years, including touring with Hayes Carll last year and sharing the stage with Jack White last month. According to the Shovels & Rope website, the duo performs harmony-driven folk, rock, and alt-country songs using two old guitars, a kick drum, snare, tambourine, harmonica, and a little keyboard. As Trent and Hearst put it, “We make as much noise as we possibly can.”
Shovels & Rope formed in 2010 and its debut album “O Be Joyful” was released July 31 of this year on Dualtone records. The staff at music website No Depression said of Trent and Hearst, “If you want to see what hard working musicians looks like, go see Shovels & Rope. If you want to hear what original music sounds like, go see Shovels & Rope. If you want to know what Americana feels like, go see Shovels & Rope!”
Now, about the name. It comes from the title of a record Hearst and Trent put out called “Shovels & Rope.”
“It’s a pretty good record featuring several murder ballads where some characters were hanging and others were doing the burying, so the title seemed apt,” the duo says. “It now serves as the official moniker of the band.”
Opening the Ignition Garage show at 7:30 p.m. will be Carey Murdock.
Tickets are $15 advance-sale, or $18 day of show. Tickets can be purchased at Better World Books or by calling 574-534-1984. They can also be purchased online at www.ignitionmusic.net, where Ignition Garage membership sign-up is also available.
