GOSHEN — Music lives and has its own life.

These words come from Anna Montgomery, a professional singer, songwriter and teacher for 15 years. For Montgomery, the musical life this weekend will involve a homecoming. The Goshen native will be the headliner in a concert at Ignition Garage Sunday.

Montgomery was to have been the opening act for Justin Jones. However, Jones was in an accident and broke a rib, so he had to cancel the first two weeks of his tour.

Montgomery is now the headliner for the Ignition show, joined by Allison Ann. She’s anticipating performing music promoting her new concept album, “Dream Logic.”

“The concept record is about dream life. I picked the topic,” Montgomery said in a recent phone interview with The Goshen News. “It’s highlighting dreams like lucid dreams, visitation dreams and insomnia. The writers’ group I belong to told me I should do an album on dreams because I write a lot from my dreams, and that’s what inspired the album.”

Music comes naturally to Montgomery thanks to the musical family she grew up with — her father, Gary Montgomery, a pop/rock songwriter and her mother, Kay Montgomery, was a college voice professor and opera coach. Montgomery said her mother taught at Goshen College for 16 years.

Montgomery’s career got a jump-start in 2003 and 2004 as a back-up singer and opening act in a national tour with Shelby Lynne. Since then, Montgomery has largely stopped performing live, instead writing lyrics and providing vocals as a session singer in an array of styles.

“I am still an artist in my own right,” she said.

Montgomery’s a songwriting teacher and half of her students in Los Angeles are taught via Skype, she said, since a lot of her teaching consists of talking and sharing about songs and writing songs.

“Technology is good,” Montgomery said, laughing. “I have a career in Europe with widely rotated cuts on European dance radio, and it’s all done by Internet. They send me beats and chords for a topline. I write lyrics and melody, then I sing it and send the vocal to them. I’ve never met anybody in Europe and I have a career there.”

During her visit in Goshen, she will be presenting a songwriting workshop at Goshen High School for students in the music department.

“I’ll tell them that music is your art and sometimes it comes back and sometimes it doesn’t. Don’t be critical and stop judging your own music,” Montgomery said. “Keep writing, move forward and explore areas of art form.”
