---- — GOSHEN — Summer’s on its way, and it’s time to celebrate.

“Sweet Summer Kick-off” is the theme for the June First Fridays in Goshen. As part of celebration, the event will feature live music on the courthouse lawn, a sidewalk chalk art event, an ice cream social and numerous other offerings perfect for ushering in the summer months.

Headlining Friday’s festivities will be a special Elkhart River Restoration Association Rain Barrel Auction set for 6 p.m. at the First Fridays Main Stage on the courthouse lawn.

Through the event, the ERRA will be auctioning off 12 rain barrels artistically enhance by local painters.

“Twelve barrels will be auctioned to support local artists, raise awareness of improving water quality in the Elkhart River Watershed, and to support activities of ERRA, including stocking walleye in the Elkhart River both up and downstream of the Goshen Dam Pond,” reads First Fridays online material. “Funds from the auction are shared by local artists and ERRA, which seeks to improve the water quality in the Elkhart River Watershed, including the Goshen Dam Pond.”

According to the ERRA, rain barrels help homeowners reduce the amount of stormwater runoff from their property, which in turns helps to reduce flooding and the number of pollutants in the local river and other streams. The gradual infiltration of water into the ground also recharges the local groundwater supply — which supplies all drinking water for the Goshen area.
