You got to love it when a plan comes together.
Jason Samuel is on a five‑week sabbatical doing research for a music project. In Nashville, he’s at the home of a Sugar Hill Records senior radio rep. He’s in the same office as Sugar Hill management. One of the many acts Sugar Hill has on it’s label is moe.
The band tours nationally and is a staple on the festival scene. So when some Sugar Hill reps came to Samuel asking about a place to play a few songs on moe.’s day off, Samuel knew right where to point them.
The band had a show Tuesday in Wisconsin and performed Thursday night in Buffalo, New York. They spent Wednesday playing for almost an hour at Ignition Music Garage in downtown Goshen.
All the tables and chairs were cleared out to fit roughly 200 people. Ignition Garage owner Steve Martin cleared all the hurdles to accommodate a tractor trailer of equipment and a tour bus.
Samuel, a professor at Goshen College as well as general manager of 91.1 The Globe, streamed the show online. The station also interviewed the band between songs.
This is not a new thing. The partnership between Ignition and The Globe has produced such shows in the past.
“We’ve had many shows with artists of that caliber,” said Martin. “Just not that large of a following.”
Tickets for the free concert, Martin said, were snatched up in about 15 minutes on June 14.
Samuel said he met people from Chicago who came to Wednesday’s early evening show. The show was an affirmation of how great of a community Goshen is Samuel said.
For Martin, he estimated 2/3 of the people at the show were first-timers to Ignition.
They learned what many in the area already know: Ignition Garage is a great venue. And for Samuel, Wednesday’s show solidifies Goshen’s growing reputation.
“People in Nashville, people in New York, they know Goshen,” said Samuel.
“We’ve got so much going on here. The millrace, the Hawks building, downtown, that hotel, the façade program, First Fridays,” Samuel explained. “There’s so many things happening in this town. We have a great scene here in Goshen.”
