Benefit concert at Ignition Garage Friday

GOSHEN — Goldmine Pickers, Andru Bemis and The Moore Brothers will be in concert Friday at Ignition Garage, 120 E. Washington St., Goshen.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $15 and are available at Ignition. The concert is to promote and raise funds for the second-ever FolkyFishFest, set for next month in Angola.

Goldmine Pickers have been performing in the United States and Europe for 10 years now. The band’s sound is a blend of Americana, bluegrass, folk, old-time and Irish music, country and jam.

The Pickers’ discography includes its self-titled 2004 debut and  “Lonesome Gone” (2007). Of the group’s sophomore effort, Tom Conway of the South Bend Tribune wrote, “‘Lonesome Gone’ is a definitive artistic statement, with an eclectic set of mostly original tunes that establishes the band as a new breed of the Americana musical realm.” In 2009, the band released “Goldmine Pickers Live.”

Goldmine Pickers member Lukas Simpson is the FolkyFishFest organizer.

The Moore Brothers perform traditional acoustic and electric roots music. The group, which includes brothers Tom and David Moore, specializes in blues but also performs in genres including gospel, ragtime and rockabilly.

Well-toured since 2001, Bemis performs on banjo, guitar and sometimes fiddle or banjo ukulele. The Birmingham Weekly in Alabama describes Bemis as a “modern-folk, Midwestern miracle of music...with a voice that is pretty and ravaged, sounding as though 50 Appalachian winters have run him ragged.”

Bemis is on tour with John C. Reilly’s band, John Reilly and Friends.

The festival

FolkyFishFest runs Aug. 16 to 18 at Lake Luther Campground, 5215 N. 450 West, Angola.

The event will feature more than 25 musical acts performing on three different stages. The musicians will also present workshops.

FolkyFishFest will also include fishing and fishing workshops and demonstrations, nature walks, art and nature activities, yoga, swimming, camping, contra dancing, open mics and jams, and knitting and crochet circles and workshops.
