The Deep Dark Woods to perform at Goshen's Ignition Garage

GOSHEN — Sugarhill Recording group The Deep Dark Woods has added Goshen to its national tour.

After opening for Robert Earl Keen earlier this year, the band has just returned from Europe for a U.S. tour in support of its new album, “The Place I Left Behind.” The album has garnered Sirius XM Indie and Juno Award nominations.

The Deep Dark Woods will perform at 8 p.m. Monday at Ignition Garage, 120 E. Washington St. Tickets cost $15 and can be purchased at Better World Books — next door to the venue — or by calling 574-534-1984.

First established in 2005, The Deep Dark Woods consists of singer/guitarist Ryan Boldt, guitarist Burke Barlow, bassist Chris Mason, organist and pianist Geoff Hilhorst and drummer Lucas Goetz.

The band’s new album follows the 2009 recording “Winter Hours.” Pitchfork awarded the album a 7.3 rating, praising the “warm and fully-fleshed string arrangements ... ‘Winter Hours’ abounds with ballads about small mistakes swollen large ...” After the release of “Winter Hours,” Deep Dark Woods won the title “Best Roots Group” at the Western Canadian Music Awards and “Ensemble of the Year” at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.

Ignition Garage is the performance venue at Ignition Music, which had its grand opening Feb. 3.

“We are now booking a full schedule of monthly shows of national recording acts,” said Ignition owner Steve Martin. “Our intent is to schedule one professional touring artist each month, with plans to double by mid-summer.”
