Americana artist Amy LaVere performs in Goshen

GOSHEN — The “Stranger” introduced herself to a downtown Goshen audience Sunday night.

Americana artist Amy LaVere performed at Ignition Garage, 120 E. Washington St., leading a three-piece band that also included Shawn Zorn on drums and Tim Regan on guitar and keyboards. LaVere handled lead vocals and upright bass.

LaVere’s set list included material off her “Stranger Me” album (the title cut and “Damn Love Song”) and covers of Tom Waits, Captain Beefheart (“Candle Mambo”) and Mickey and Sylvia.

She also previewed songs from her forthcoming album “The Runaway’s Diary.” One was inspired by her sister — a wonderful person now, LaVere explained, but “a beast” for a five- or six-year stretch. For another, she took pains to downplay the menace of the title: “Self-Made Orphan.”

“I don’t mean to say that I killed my parents,” LaVere said. “Because somebody asked me that.”

In introducing LaVere, Ignition owner Steve Martin recalled seeing her perform a few years ago. He described LaVere, diminutive size aside, as “a force of nature.”

“She’s pretty cool,” he said.

Next on the Ignition Garage concert calendar is a May 5 performance by Zach DuBois. Showtime is 7 p.m.
