Green is growing in popularity.
“Green Day Frolic” is the theme of this week’s First Fridays event in downtown Goshen, highlighted by a 5k run and 2k walk.
“It’s a fun event as well as an athletic event,” said Gina Leichty, director of Downtown Goshen Inc., which promotes First Fridays. It’s also an activity for which Leichty is anticipating a strong turnout.
Leichty said Wednesday that more people have registered in advance for the event than ever before. As of mid-week, 250 people had registered, compared to 180 people last year.
Registration runs from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Main Street, with the 5k run set to start at 6 p.m. The 2k walk starts at 6:10 p.m.
Leichty said the run/walk starting point will be at Lincoln and Main. Participants will head down Main Street to Washington Street and then proceed to the millrace trail.
Competitors will receive prizes for the fastest times in various age divisions. Runners and walkers are also urged to wear green attire. Event organizers will award a prize for best costume.
Other First Fridays highlights include:
• Musicians who will perform along the running path. Players will include Caleb Sawin on the banjo and Logan Miller and Nathaniel Tann on acoustic guitar.
• Inflatable jumpers for children to enjoy on the courthouse lawn from 6 to 8 p.m.
• Young dancers in the Goshen Parks and Recreation program “Dance in the City” will perform from 7:30 to 8 p.m. at the Goshen Theater ballroom, 216 S. Main St. Leichty said the dancers will be doing pieces from their spring recital.
This week, First Fridays enthusiasts are invited to go for a run or walk. Next month, it’s time to ride.
Criterium races and a bike festival are scheduled for May 3 and 4. Events will be offered for competitive cyclists, and rides for children and families will be available as well.
“Biking is really huge in Goshen and the surrounding area, so we want to make Goshen a place where people can go for that event,” Leichty said.
First Fridays is a monthly event highlighting businesses, artists and entertainers in downtown Goshen. Downtown Goshen Inc. is a not-for-profit group focused on the growth and vibrancy of the city’s commercial core.
