'Like a Hug' reading contest set

Syracuse Public Library

115 E. Main St., 457-3022

“Like a Hug ... The Fragrant Smell of Baking and a Good Book,” is the name of the adult reading contest at the Syracuse library.

Two winners will be picked each week to receive a candle scented with a baking fragrance. Winners will be selected from ballots that are submitted when books or audiobooks are checked out or returned to the library from Tuesday through Feb. 11. Winners will be drawn for four weeks beginning on Jan. 21.

Recipes

Library staffers say they are collecting recipes for “sweet comfort foods that smell so nice when they are baking.” Library visitors are asked to write down a favorite recipe on a 3-by-5-inch index card. The recipes will be shared in early February.

Children’s activities

The Children’s Book Club will meet Tuesday from 5 to 6 p.m. Children from kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to attend and enjoy a snack and a “bookish” activity.

The homeschoolers’ group will meet Thursday at 2 p.m. During these sessions, parents discuss strategies and resources they find helpful in the home teaching environment while the children meet with the librarian to take part in educational activities. Newcomers are invited to attend.

Reading program

Adults age 18 an older are invited to join the library’s Winter Adult Reading Club. Registration is underway. The program continues through March 31, and participants can enter weekly drawings for prizes.

This year’s club theme is “Literary Elements,” featuring books, movies and other materials related to science.

‘After School Is Cool’

Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., “Miss Shari” will make “penguins” for participants to take home and eat. The activity is part of the library’s “After School Is Cool” program.
