Way to go, Sierra Walter

Fairfield student Sierra Walter has done a good deed that will long be remembered in the Goshen and Fairfield communities.

About four years ago Sierra had the idea of collecting 1 million pennies to donate to agencies helping victims of cystic fibrosis. With continued determination and help from her family and friends and many people in the community, Sierra exceeded her goal.

This past week Sierra donated $5,200 to two cystic fibrosis agencies. Other non-profit agencies will also receive funds from her campaign.

Sierra’s story is a fine example of how many young people respond to adversity with care and compassion for others. You see, she suffers from cystic fibrosis, but didn’t let that problem get her down, or slow her down. Instead, she considered what she could do about the disease she and about 30,000 other young Americans suffer from. Her solution was to raise funds to help advance the research into the treatment of the disease.

Her “go get ’em” attitude is a great example for others suffering from diseases and who may be wondering “why me?” As Sierra must know, it is far better to be actively involved in searching for better treatments, and maybe a cure, than to sit by and let others do something about the problem. Remember, God helps those who help themselves.

Sierra received thank-yous from the Cystic Fybrosis Foundation and the Cystic Fibrosis Council for her donations to those agencies. The rest of us should also tell her thank-you and commend her on her compassion and foresight in helping others.
