Saving the earth no simple task

Fame, talent, wealth — Paul McCartney has all these things. He also has a new Lexus, which has garnered the former Beatle and Wings-man a bit of bad press.

McCartney has long championed environmentalism and animal rights. The Lexus, at first glance, would seem a good fit for Sir Paul. His vehicle utilizes a hybrid system dependent on an electric motor at low speeds, according to the Associated Press.

Critics have grumbled, however. It turns out the Lexus was flown to McCartney in Britain rather than shipped. Shipping reportedly leaves a smaller “carbon footprint.”

This alleged faux pas warrants a couple of observations. One is that so-called “green” technology is sometimes less eco-friendly on closer inspection. The Lexus episode has a parallel in the ethanol craze. Ethanol is great — until the energy used to produce it is factored in.

Another is that Paul McCartney should be cut a break.

The jury is still out on the threat of global warming, but there’s no doubt we can help the environment via energy-saving and conservation practices. The fact remains, though, that people impact the earth simply by being here.

Humans have grown accustomed to the niceties of comfortable shelter, efficient travel, and gas and electric utilities. The planet’s health would be improved with a global ban on manufacturing and motorized transportation. Any takers?

Environmental concerns are a hot topic of late. Many of us demand that sacrifices be made. Too many think the biggest sacrifices should be made by someone else.
