Police calling woman’s death ‘suspicious’

— A 76-year-old Elkhart woman was found dead in her home Friday — a death police are calling suspicious — and a hunt is on for her missing car.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Deputies responded Friday to 54640 Michael Drive, Elkhart, to investigate the death of Norma J. Hopper. Investigators are asking for the public’s help in locating a vehicle that is missing from the residence.  

The vehicle is described as a blue 1998 Chevy Lumina  four-door bearing Indiana license plate SPV314. Anyone with information on the location of this vehicle or information concerning this incident, should contact the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department at (574) 533-4151.

Investigators are working on a cause of death with the Elkhart County Coroner’s office. An autopsy was scheduled for 10 a.m. today.

Theft/burglary reports

•  Mark Bemis, Middlebury, told Elkhart County police someone removed an IX Satellite Radio Receiver from his company’s 2012 gold Toyota Sienna Van located at 603 Redbud Lane, Middlebury, between Tuesday at 8:01 a.m. and Wednesday at 6:30 a.m.

•  Barbara Castenada, 611 Stevens Court, Goshen, told Goshen police someone burglarized her residence at approximately midnight Thursday.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

•  An employee of Bashor Homes, 62226 C.R. 15, Goshen, told Elkhart County police a 13-year-old male broke a window to a door at the facility at approximately 4:35 p.m. Wednesday.

•  Edgard Lozano, 311 New St., of Goshen, told Goshen police several suspicious individuals were outside his residence at approximately 10:28 a.m. Thursday.

Bicyclist struck by car

•  Orlan D. Troyer, 19, of Middlebury, was headed west on C.R. 20, east of C.R. 41 and struck a bicyclist, Merlin Stolzfus, 20, who was also headed west at 9:31 p.m. Thursday, according to Elkhart County police. Stoltzfus was transported to Parkview Regional Hospital for nasal fractures and facial lacerations.



Crash reports

•  Shirley Grace, 60, of Middlebury, was traveling northbound on C.R. 35, south of C.R. 20. Her 2003 Buick LeSabre slid off the east side of C.R. 35 and collided with a utility pole and then slid off the west side of C.R. 35. Grace was taken to Goshen General Hospital for laceration to right forehead, complaint of pain to neck, back and left knee.

Intimidation reports

• A Michigan State Police trooper advised Goshen police a threat was made to a Goshen resident at approximately midnight Thursday.
