Info on Elkhart shooting sought

Elkhart police are currently investigating a shooting that occurred at 11:50 a.m. Thursday in Elkhart. According to Elkhart police, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of East Indiana Avenue in reference to the sound of shots fired. Upon arriving at the scene, a man was reportedly located with firearm–related injuries.

The man was transported to Elkhart General Hospital by Elkhart Fire Department medics where his current condition is listed as guarded. It is believed the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting fled the scene on foot. Anyone with information connected to the shooting is asked to contact the detective bureau at 295-7076 or the department tip line at 389-4777.

Bristol man charged with killing whitetail deer

A Bristol man was charged with the illegal killing of a whitetail deer at approximately midnight Wednesday in Bristol.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Division, Eladio Garcia, 41, Bristol, shot a button buck deer with a 12–gauge shotgun and left it for dead in a field behind his residence. A concerned citizen contacted the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department regarding the shooting. Department officials then contacted Indiana Conservation Officer Mark Richter, who interviewed Garcia about the incident late Wednesday night. Following the interview, a search was conducted on Garcia’s property at which time the deer carcass was located. Garcia was charged with one misdemeanor count of illegal taking of a whitetail deer and the firearm used in the shooting was confiscated.

Crash reports

• A driver was injured in a two-vehicle crash at Ind. 19 and C.R. 30 Tuesday. The collision occurred at 4:08 p.m. According to Elkhart County police, a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 driven by Todd Eby, 49, Elkhart, collided with a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Richard Nell, 59, Millersburg. The force of the crash caused Snell’s vehicle to flip over and struck a utility pole, breaking it off as a result of the collision. Snell was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of a laceration to the head, bruising to the left leg, abdomen and arm. Eby was ticketed for failure to yield the right of way at a thru highway and was not injured.

Traffic incidents

• Pablo Rodriguez-Marquez, 22, 165 Roxbury Park, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash at 9:33 p.m. Saturday. He was released with a memorandum to appear in court.

• Elkhart County police said Michelle Buie, 40, was the driver of a Chevrolet Venture that crashed into a Toyota Yaris on Ind. 15, south of C.R. 40 in Goshen and left the scene Friday. Police cited Buie and released her at the scene.

• A 16-year-old male was arrested by Elkhart County police at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday on Reith Boulevard, just west of C.R. 17, on multiple driving-related charges. The male was reportedly stopped for a traffic violation and attempted to flee the scene before losing control of his vehicle and crashing into the curb on Reith Boulevard. He was taken into custody at the scene and then released to his parents.

Unattended children reports

• Goshen police were called to a residence in the 200 block of North Fifth Street after two girls, ages 3 and 4, were discovered unattended in the road at 8:10 p.m. Saturday. Police said the parents were found to be sleeping. A report was taken and the Department of Child Services was contacted.

Missing person reports

• Robin E. Powers, Union, Mich., told Elkhart County police his daughter, Christle Stouder, 29, 19247 C.R. 104, Bristol, has been missing since around noon Monday.

Theft/burglary reports and arrests

• Brooke M. Bartley, 33, was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of theft at Martin’s Super Market, 1527 Bashor Road, Goshen, Monday evening. Bartley was released with a signed memorandum to appear in Goshen City Court.

• A South Sixth Street resident contacted Goshen police Sunday after locating several stolen items in her juvenile son’s room. According to police, the items were stolen by the woman’s son and other juveniles from motor vehicles.  

• Stanley Gill, 1414 Cedarbrook Court, Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole his 2011 ZHEJ mo–ped from his residence between 8 p.m. Saturday and 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

• A 17-year-old male at 356 Stone Drive, Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole his mo-ped at 1 a.m. Sunday.

• Franklin Creech, 422 S. Eighth St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole several items valued at more than $2,500 from his residence at 4:51 p.m. Sunday.

• Jeffrey Hashberger told Elkhart County police that someone broke two windows at an unoccupied home at 53663 Woodside Drive, Bristol, and stole copper piping and a sub pump between May 19 and May 30.

• Laura Reynolds, 54013 C.R. 17, Bristol, told Elkhart County police someone stole a black 6-month-old canine from her residence Saturday.

• Larry Stauffer, 64953 Ind. 19, Wakarusa, told Elkhart County police someone forced open the locked door to his recreation vehicle, entered and stole a Toshiba television. The theft took place while the vehicle was parked in the back yard of his residence between 5 p.m. May 27 and 1 p.m. Monday.

• Luke Gascho, 2514 S. Main St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole two large ceramic planters with flowers and three small trees from his yard late Sunday.

• Sirquence Ruffin, 403 E. Lincoln Ave., Goshen, told Goshen police someone entered his residence and removed property during the early morning hours Sunday.

• Tamara Collier, 54660 Colonial Ridge Drive, Bristol, told Elkhart County police someone stole approximately $7,000 in cash from her residence between 2 and 5 p.m. Sunday.

• Lester Mishler, 10796 C.R. 10, Middlebury, told Elkhart County police someone stole two red reflectors on posts and two bronze-colored solar lights from the end of his driveway between 10 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. Tuesday.

• Brittany Goldsberry, 63405 C.R. 13, Goshen, told Elkhart County police someone stole her 2002 black Toyota Sequoia sometime May 18.

• Phillip Ross told Elkhart County police someone stole his wallet from a locker at Work Release, 201 N. Cottage Ave., Goshen, between 11:45 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Tuesday.

• Loss prevention employees at Supercenter Walmart, 2304 Lincolnway East, Goshen, told Goshen police two females left the store and failed to pay for the items inside their cart at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday.

• Janae Davis, 115 Huron St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole her wallet from the front porch of her residence at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

• Sean I. Pelikant, 38, 2981 North 50 West, LaPorte, was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of theft at Meijer, 4522 Elkhart Road, Goshen, and released on a memorandum to appear in court at 1:24 a.m. Wednesday.

• Employees at Conoco, 112 W. Pike St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole unleaded fuel valued at $69 at 5:15 a.m. Wednesday.

• Hannah Reed, Goshen, told Goshen police her cell phone was stolen from her vehicle at 10 p.m. Tuesday while parked at 1006 Michigan Ave., Goshen.

• Penny Seegers, Goshen, told Goshen police her iPod Classic was stolen from her vehicle at 7 p.m. May 31 while parked at 930 Michigan Ave., Goshen.

• Luis Alvarado, 822 S. 11th St., Goshen, told Goshen police his residence was burglarized at 11:10 p.m. Monday.

• Andres Valtierra, 19845 Meadow Ridge Drive, Goshen, told Elkhart County police he lent his cell phone to an acquaintance April 26 and the subject has refused to return the cell phone. A report was taken.

• Chad Layman, 68281 Main St., New Paris, told Elkhart County police two diagnostic car scanners were stolen from his unlocked garage at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Fraud reports

• Wilma Charles of Goshen told Goshen police someone fraudulently used her debit card at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

• Cynthia Rocha of Goshen told Goshen police she was the victim of fraud involving an Internet loan at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

• Cliff Van Guilder, New Paris, told Elkhart County police someone fraudulently used his bank account information to make a withdrawal at approximately noon Tuesday.

• Murray Bowman, 12772 C.R. 44, Millersburg, told Elkhart County police someone fraudulently accessed in bank account at 1:37 p.m. May 21 and withdrew funds.

Assault/battery reports and arrests

• Leroy Zartman, Goshen, told Goshen police he was battered at 11:16 p.m. Wednesday while in the 400 block of North Main Street, Goshen. He was transported by ambulance to IU Health Goshen Hospital for treatment.

• Jordan N. Griffes, 26, and Valerie J. Griffes, 27, both of 1334 Harvest Drive, Goshen, were arrested by Goshen police at 3 a.m. Thursday at their residence on charges of domestic battery. They were booked into the county jail.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Keith Merrifield of LaGrange told LaGrange County police someone caused damage to his barn in the area of 1500 W. U.S. 20 sometime Friday.

• William Greenwalt, 1018 N. Sixth St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone damaged lawn decoration at his residence Friday.

• Anna Holbrook, 630 Emerson St., Goshen, told Goshen police her car was vandalized while parked in the street overnight Monday.

• Brian Purkey, 18846 Wilson Drive, Goshen, told Elkhart County police someone drove a vehicle across his yard and damaged the lawn at 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

• Ramond F. Miller, 55796 Alverstone Drive E, Middlebury, told Elkhart County police someone entered his yard, pulled up a patio light from the lawn and threw a decorative frog back into the yard at 10:01 p.m. Monday.

• Herbert Mills told Goshen police someone broke a glass window at the Goshen Community Schools Transportation Building, 613 E. Purl St., Goshen, at 2:09 p.m. Tuesday.

• David Ohaneson told Goshen police someone spray painted on the exterior of the rental property at 517 N. Fifth St., Goshen, around midnight May 21.

Disorderly conduct reports

• Chaniece L. Doss, 24, 2631 Ashton Pines Drive, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest at her residence early Sunday evening. She was transported and incarcerated at the Elkhart County jail.

Drug/alcohol arrests

• Jimmy Rivera, 45, 304 N. Riverside Blvd., Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police on charges of possession of a controlled substance, driving while his license privileges were suspended and on a Goshen city warrant around 6:30 p.m. Saturday. He was arrested after a traffic stop in 1500 block of Elkhart Road in Goshen and transported to the Elkhart County jail.

• Gary Looney, 919  S. Eighth St., Goshen, was arrested by Elkhart County police on charges of possession of marijuana and paraphernalia and criminal warrants at around 11 p.m. Friday. He was incarcerated at the Elkhart County jail.

• Daniel Hill, 19, and Brian Walls, 18, were cited and released on charges of consuming alcoholic beverages. The incident took place in the area of Johnston and Hackett streets in Goshen around 10:53 p.m. A 15-year-old juvenile male was released to a family member on a charge of consuming alcoholic beverages.

OWI arrests

The following motorists were recently arrested and incarcerated on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated:

• Luis Perez, 39, 1015 Beaver Lane, Goshen, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic stop on Elkhart Road near Bashor Road in Goshen at 10:44 p.m. Saturday.

• Freddie D. Johnson, 39, 26883 Silverwater Way, Elkhart, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic stop at U.S. 33 and C.R. 15 in Goshen at 1:39 a.m. Sunday.

• Bernard I. Barnett, 50, 24697 Minuteman, Elkhart, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic stop on C.R. 13, north of U.S. 33 in Elkhart around 5:30 a.m. Monday. A passenger, Charde Calbert, 24, 2631 Ashton Pines Drive 2C, Goshen, was arrested on a warrant.

Sentencings

The following people were recently sentenced in Elkhart Superior Court 3:

• Charles C. Lyles, 37, Goshen, was sentenced to four years in the Department of Correction on a Class B felony charge of dealing in methamphetamine. In addition, Lyles was ordered to serve two years on home detention and four years on probation.

• Michael J. Davies, 23, Goshen, was sentenced to four years on probation on a Class C felony count of child molesting.
