Goshen man arrested on murder charge

ELKHART — Elkhart police have arrested a suspect in a burglary that result in a Goshen man’s death.

Anthony Perez Sharp, 18, Goshen, has been taken into custody on a charge of murder.

Around 2 a.m. today, police received information that Sharp was at an address at Carriage House Apartments. Police located him at 1212 Burr Oak Lane, Apt. B.

The burglary occurred around 2:30 p.m. Oct. 3. During a news conference earlier this week, Elkhart County Prosecutor Curtis Hill said that Sharp and Jose Quiroz, 16, Elkhart, Blake Layman, 16, Elkhart, and Danzele Johnson, 21, Goshen, allegedly broke into the home of Rodney Scott, 54, 1919 Frances Ave. Hill said Levi Sparks, 17, Elkhart, allegedly waited outside as a lookout.

Scott had been asleep upstairs. Hill said Scott came downstairs and fired five shots from a handgun and shot Johnson. A bullet grazed Layman. Johnson died as a result of his injuries.

Quiroz and Layman were in custody shortly after the shooting, and Sparks was arrested Monday. A warrant had been issued for Sharp. All four face murder charges.

Hill said Scott would not be charged in connection with the shooting.

“I have determined that Mr. Scott acted reasonably with regards to these events,” the prosecutor said Monday. During the same press conference, Hill said this is not the first time he has charged criminal suspects with murder when one of their accomplices has been killed during the commission of a felony.

“I think what you can glean from that is, if you break into someone’s home and you end up getting shot or injured, you can face some serious consequences... People breaking into homes, whether someone is home or someone is not there, it has got to stop,” Hill said. “From our standpoint we are going to use every available measure under the law to stop it.”
