THE GOSHEN NEWS

— A one-vehicle crash caused the death of an Elkhart man and left a Elkhart teen injured Tuesday evening on Old U.S. Hwy. 33, west of Elkhart Park Drive in Elkhart.

According to Elkhart County police, Nichole Besemer, 17, was driving east on Old U.S. Hwy.. 33, when she lost control of her 1999 Dodge Caravan on the snow-covered road and struck an AEP utility pole, snapping it in half. Her passenger, Trent Forte, 19, was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of lacerated liver and other internal injuries. He died at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday from those injuries. An autopsy was scheduled Wednesday by the County Coroner’s office.

Besemer was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of a contusion to her forehead and complaint of severe pain to her hip and pelvis.

The Elkhart County Sheriff Department’s Crash Investigation Team assisted with taking measurements and video of the scene. Besemer was found to be driving without obtaining a valid driver’s license and the crash is still being investigated.

Cromwell woman critical after fire

A 91-year-old woman was critically injured after a weekend house fire near Cromwell, authorities said.

Around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to a call at 10510 W. 200 South, Cromwell, in Noble County and had it under control by 9:30 p.m., said Jason Stump, a spokesman with Sparta Township Fire Department.

A neighbor had helped Eleanor Steller, the homeowner, outside the house before the chief arrived on the scene, Stump said. It was determined the fire was caused by a candle that Steller lit and then fell asleep. The two-story farmhouse, where she lived alone, was a complete loss, Stump said.

Steller suffered smoke inhalation and burns to her face and arms and was flown by helicopter to the burn unit at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne where she remains in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon, hospital staff said.

South Bend woman hurt in crash near Wakarusa

A one-vehicle crash left a South Bend woman injured Tuesday evening on C.R. 38 two miles east of Wakarusa.

According to Elkhart County police, Holly Peavy, 26, was traveling east on C.R. 38, east of C.R. 9 when she lost control of her 2007 Mercury Milan on the snow-covered road. The vehicle struck a tree.

Peavy was transported to Elkhart General Hospital with head and back pain, according to police. Officers issued Peavy a citation for speeding in unsafe conditions.

Theft/burglary reports

• Mickel McCullough, 37, Goshen, reported a theft from his apartment Monday to Goshen police.

• Holly M. Province, 29, 1820 Westplains Dr., Goshen, was arrested on a charge of criminal conversion at Martin’s Super Market, 1527 Bashor Road, Goshen, according to Goshen police. Province was released with a court date.

• Elkhart County police responded to a report of stolen scrap metal from 24526 C.R. 45, Elkhart.

Ricky Reed, 32, 57932 Quebec St., Elkhart, and a 17-year-old Elkhart County resident were located with the scrap metal in a wooded area, police said. Reed was incarcerated at Elkhart County jail on a charge of theft and the juvenile was released to his parents.

Vandalism reports

• John Eldridge, 2124 Cedar Dr., Goshen, told Goshen police the picture window at his residence was damaged by a BB gun.

• Eric P. Sikes, 26, 55988 Ind. 15, Bristol, told Elkhart County police someone shot the south kitchen window of his home twice with a BB gun. The vandalism occurred between 3 p.m. Friday and around noon Sunday.

• A Goshen Parks and Recreation Department employee told Goshen police Monday that someone had spray painted a park bench and sidewalk on the bike trail near Mill Street Park. The vandalism occurred after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Traffic arrests

• Roman E. Hernandez, 19, was involved in a collision on C.R. 22, east of C.R. 33, Middlebury, according to Elkhart County police. Police said Hernandez was driving a motor vehicle while never receiving a valid license. He was cited to court.

• Miguel Campos, 44, 916 S. 12th St., was arrested by Goshen police after a traffic stop Sunday morning in the 600 block of East Jackson Street. He was arrested on a charge of driving while never obtaining a license. He was also taken into custody on a counterfeiting charge after several fraudulent documents were found with his name and photo on them, police reported.

Alcohol/drug arrests

• Carlos Navarro Jr., 18, 813 S. 14th St., Goshen, was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana after a traffic stop in the 900 block of Tramore Circle, Goshen police reported. According to police, a 17-year-old juvenile was also arrested on the same charge. Navarro was released and received a court date and the juvenile was released to his mother.

Report of knife

Elkhart County police received information that a 17-year-old female student possessed a small pocket knife while on a Northridge High School-related activity in another county last weekend. The investigation is ongoing, according to police.
