GOSHEN — The Elkhart County Recorder’s office this week rolled out a new online Fraud Alert subscription service that the office is making available to county residents free of charge.
“The threat of mortgage fraud and identity theft crimes continue to rise, and all too often victims of these types of fraudulent activities are unaware their homes or identities have been stolen,” said Elkhart County Recorder Jerry Weaver. “Signing up for our free Property Fraud Alert will give them a heads up to that possibility.”
According to Weaver, those who choose to sign up for the new service will be notified either by email or phone message whenever their name has been used on a new recording of a document for property in the Elkhart County Recorder’s office.
“It can alert property owners that a document has been processed with their name on it and may provide an early warning of the possibility of fraud,” Weaver said.
Anyone currently residing in Elkhart County who wishes to sign up for the new fraud alert system may subscribe free of charge at www.propertyfraudalert.com. Subscribing can also be completed by calling 800-728-3858 during regular business hours.
“The free service and data base are managed and maintained for us by Fidlar Technologies, the Elkhart Recorder’s software provider for land records,” Weaver said. “If you have any questions about this service, you can call our office in Goshen at 574-535-6756 and someone will assist you.”
