ELKHART — The name of the person shot and killed by Elkhart city police officers Sunday has been released.

Dead is Jamie I. Benavidez, 27, Elkhart.

Prior to the shooting, Elkhart police had responded to a burglary-in-progress call at 332 W. Hubbard. Indiana State Police said Benavidez and a juvenile male fled from the home, and a foot pursuit began.

The boy, at 14, reportedly gave up and was arrested at 312 W. Lusher Ave. He was later released to his father. Police continued to pursue Benavidez until the chase ended at 328 W. Lusher. Elkhart police officers shot Benavidez after he allegedly pointed a gun at them.

Three Elkhart police officers fired their weapons at Benavidez, investigators reported.

Indiana State Police personnel are investigating the shooting as a matter of Elkhart Police Department’s protocol of having an outside agency complete an investigation involving its officers.
