Driver jailed after chase with cops on mo-ped

A White Pigeon, Mich., man was arrested by Elkhart County police after a pursuit from Michigan, into Goshen and then ending in Middlebury.

According to Elkhart County police, at 6:46 p.m. Thursday a police pursuit from St. Joseph County, Mich., entered Elkhart County. Officers gave chase and the pursuit eventually entered Goshen. Goshen police assisted.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Jim Bradberry said Scott Bennett, 37, 800 W. Chicago Road, White Pigeon, was riding a mo-ped throughout the pursuit.

“He did go through the Pumpkinvine trail at some point,” Bradberry said.

The pursuit then continued into Middlebury. Bradberry said police had a road block set up at C.R. 22 and C.R. 37. “(Bennett) basically drove around the vehicles,” the captain said. Bennett left the road but was faced with a chain link fence.

“He then basically stopped and dropped the mo-ped and officers took him into custody,” Bradberry said. That happened at 7:24 p.m.

Bennett was arrested on a felony charge of resisting law enforcement and was taken to the Elkhart County jail.

Information about why police were attempting to stop Bennett initially was not available Friday.
