Driver jailed after chase with cops on mo-ped

A White Pigeon, Mich., man was arrested by Elkhart County police after a pursuit from Michigan, into Goshen and then ending in Middlebury.

According to Elkhart County police, at 6:46 p.m. Thursday a police pursuit from St. Joseph County, Mich., entered Elkhart County. Officers gave chase and the pursuit eventually entered Goshen. Goshen police assisted.

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Jim Bradberry said Scott Bennett, 37, 800 W. Chicago Road, White Pigeon, was riding a mo-ped throughout the pursuit.

“He did go through the Pumpkinvine trail at some point,” Bradberry said.

The pursuit then continued into Middlebury. Bradberry said police had a road block set up at C.R. 22 and C.R. 37. “(Bennett) basically drove around the vehicles,” the captain said. Bennett left the road but was faced with a chain link fence.

“He then basically stopped and dropped the mo-ped and officers took him into custody,” Bradberry said. That happened at 7:24 p.m.

Bennett was arrested on a felony charge of resisting law enforcement and was taken to the Elkhart County jail.

Information about why police were attempting to stop Bennett initially was not available Friday.

Crash reports

• Robert Zawacki of Goshen told Goshen police he was struck on his bike by a passing motorist Thursday. The incident occurred shortly before 9 a.m. at the intersection of C.R.s 28 and 17.

Theft/burglary reports

• David P. Moser told Goshen police Thursday two bicycles were stolen during the overnight hours at 813 S. Seventh St.

• Lela Rohrer of Goshen reported fraudulent activity on her credit card account to Goshen police Thursday.

• Staff at Gold ’n Comforts told Goshen police Thursday someone stole the catalytic converter from the business’ deliver van while it was parked at 2626 Peddlers Village Road.

• Elaine S. Weyenberg told Elkhart County police Wednesday someone made an unauthorized withdrawal of $912.28 on her Interra Credit Union debit card account.

• Owen E. Martin of Goshen told Elkhart County police that on June 5, someone made two unauthorized purchases on his Interra Credit Union card.

Battery/threat reports

• A 12-year-old Middlebury girl was reportedly threatened by several other juveniles via Facebook between 10 p.m. Monday and 1 a.m. Tuesday, Elkhart County police reported.

• Staff at Bashor Children’s Home, 62226 C.R. 15, Goshen, told Elkhart County police Thursday of a juvenile battering another juvenile, breaking electronic equipment and stealing multiple items at Bashor. The youth resisted police officers who arrived at the scene and was placed in a confinement cell.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Steven J. Kawalski Jr. of Goshen told city police Thursday that someone tried to break out the window of his car while it was parked in the 900 block of South Eighth Street.

• Marco Mingucha, 309 Queen St., told Goshen police he heard someone hitting his vehicle while it was parked on the street in front of his home. The incident occurred around 11:42 p.m. Thursday.

• Brett Mann, 59854 C.R. 19, Goshen, told Elkhart County police someone drove a vehicle through his yard, damaging the turf lawn. The incident occurred between around 10:30 p.m. Aug. 9 and around 8 a.m. Aug. 10.

• Dennis Gaither, 53460 Pine Brook Drive, Bristol, told Elkhart County police someone placed rotten meat in and on his mailbox between 10:30 p.m. Monday and 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Traffic arrests

• Johnnie M. Jones, 35, 105 Mill St., Goshen, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic around 12:30 a.m. Thursday on C.R. 6 at Dexter Drive. Jones was reportedly driving without insurance and while her driving privileges were suspended. She was incarcerated.

Alcohol/drug arrests

• Scott A. Hankins, 18, 24702 Perkins Ave., Elkhart, was arrested by Goshen police after traffic stop around 11:49 p.m. Thursday in the 3600 block of Elkhart Road. Hankins was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana and released with a court date to appear in Goshen City Court.

OWI arrests

The following motorists were arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated:

• Edgar Ivan Rios, 30, 410 Madison St., Goshen, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a one-vehicle crash around 9:24 p.m. Thursday at C.R. 17 and Ind. 120. He was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, driving while his driving privileges were suspended and driving while never receiving a license.

• Jeffery Coney, 49, 216 Yoder St., Topeka, was arrested by LaGrange County police after a traffic stop Thursday on C.R. 100 East on Ind. 120.
