Police news for Sept. 23

— A motorcyclist died as a result of a one-vehicle crash Sunday west of Middlebury.

Dead is Evan Jones, 20, Middlebury.

The crash occurred around 12:30 p.m. on C.R. 8 west of C.R. 35. Elkhart County police said Jones was headed west on a 1998 Honda CBR 900 at an unsafe speed. Jones lost control of the cycle, which went off the north side of the road and struck a tree.

Jones was airlifted to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Boys dies after being pulled from pond

Conservation officials say a 2-year-old boy who died after being pulled from a pond near South Whitley had gone missing shortly before he was discovered in the pond.

The boy’s relatives were performing CPR on the youngster when emergency responders arrived Saturday afternoon at the Whitley County pond. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The Journal Gazette reports relatives found the boy partially submerged in the pond near  the town of South Whitley less than 10 minutes after they realized he was missing.

The child did not live at the residence with the pond about 20 miles west of Fort Wayne. His death remains under investigation.

Man pleads guilty

to weapons charge


A Nappanee entered a guilty plea in Federal Court in South Bend last week.

Michael Wilkman, 28, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Judge Christopher A. Nuechterlein to the felony offense of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.

Sentencing has been set for Dec. 20. The case resulted from an investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

OWI arrests

The following motorists were recently arrested by Goshen police on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated:

• Anthony L. Nash, 56, 607 Marion St., Elkhart, was arrested after a traffic stop around 5:30 p.m. Saturday at 59743 Graydale Road. In addition to the OWI, Nash was arrested on a charge of driving while his driving privileges were suspended.

• Dale C. Wilson, 44, 9484 Syracuse-Webster Road, Syracuse, was arrested after a traffic stop around 11:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Elkhart Road.

Theft/burglary reports

• Elizabeth D. Fugate, 1503 West Ave., Goshen, told city police Saturday that someone stole her bicycle from the front porch of her residence during the overnight hours.

• Damage to a van owned by the Elkhart County Feral Cat Coalition was reported to Goshen police Saturday. The criminal mischief occurred while the vehicle was at 1603 Westmoor Parkway.

Assault/battery reports

• A 33-year-old Goshen man told city police he was battered by a male he didn’t know in the parking lot of McDonald’s, 1706 Elkhart Road, around 9 p.m. Saturday.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Christian Robles of Goshen told city police Saturday that someone damaged the driver’s side window of his 2011 Chrysler 300 C. The vandalism occurred while the vehicle was parked at 2305 Nature View Drive.
