A South Bend man has been sentenced for robbing a Bristol bank as well as a bank in Edwardsburg, Mich., last year.
Darius Witherspoon, 21, was sentenced in U.S. District Court in South Bend this week to nearly 13 years in prison with three years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay $66,965 in restitution, according to staff with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Prior to sentencing, Witherspoon had pleaded guilty to the felony offenses of bank robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence. Prosecutors said Witherspoon had accomplices during the robberies.
Witherspoon was accused of taking approximately $53,800 during a robbery at Key Bank in Bristol Aug. 7. He and his accomplices had also robbed an Edwardsburg, Mich., bank of around $13,165 July 10.
Prosecutors said Witherspoon brandished a firearm during both robberies.
