POLICE NEWS FOR JUNE 23, 3014: Cyclist hurt when struck by vehicle

A Fort Wayne teenager was injured when his bicycle was struck by a vehicle at 12:16 p.m. Saturday near Goshen. According to Elkhart County police, Santos Valdez, 49, of Indianapolis, was driving his vehicle northbound on U.S. 33 at C.R. 40 when a cyclist in front of him attempted to turn left onto C.R. 40, at which time Valdez told police he struck the cyclist with the right side of his vehicle.

The cyclist, later identified as Owen Krauskopf, 15, of Fort Wayne, told police he thought he had enough time to make the turn in front of Valdez’ vehicle. Krauskopf was transported to IU Health Goshen Hospital for treatment of an abrasion to his left hand and lacerations to his left and right leg. Valdez was uninjured.

Bristol teen injured

A Bristol teenager was injured when his bicycle was struck by a vehicle at 2:44 p.m. Friday while riding along Ash road. According to Elkhart County police, Dylan Bailey, 14, Bristol, was traveling east across Ash Road and failed to yield the right of way to a vehicle traveling north on Ash Road south of Old U.S. 20. Bailey reportedly rode in front of the path of the second vehicle, resulting in a collision.

Bailey was transported by ambulance to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of abrasions to his head and right knee. The driver of the second vehicle, Jeffrey Cauffman, 44, Mishawaka, was uninjured. No citations were issued.

Theft/burglary reports

• Ricki L. McClain, 27, 423 Arbor Ct., Goshen, told Goshen police her vehicle was stolen while parked at her residence at 1 p.m. Friday.

• Alayna Bontreger, 29, 135 Brookside Manor, Goshen, filed a report with Goshen police at 3:41 p.m. Friday indicating a known female stole her 2001 Jeep from her residence while she was incarcerated. Bontreger advised that when she got the vehicle back, the female had intentionally damaged the vehicle’s motor. A report was taken.

    A package with a battery pack and a blinking red light found on the desk of an employee at MSC, 28551 Laura Court, Elkhart, caused police and firefighters to evacuate the area this morning.
    The package turned out to be a GPS tracking device and not a bomb.
