Two found dead in Elkhart home

Two people were found dead inside their home at 56788 Shore Ave., Elkhart at 12:39 p.m. Thursday, according to a press release. Elkhart County police said early indications suggest that carbon monoxide poisoning was a factor in the deaths of Mitchell Rider, 28, and Jamie Hooker, 28. However, a final ruling is still under review with the Elkhart County police and Elkhart County Coroner’s office, according to the release.

Personal Injury crashes

Several people were hurt in recent automobile-related crashes investigated by Elkhart County police:

• A driver was hurt in a two-vehicle crash at 10:26 a.m. Wednesday on C.R. 15 at Old U.S. 20. Police said a 1991 GMC 2500 driven by Tim L. Eckert, 53, South Bend, was towing a trailer, and struck a 1998 GMC conventional cab driven by David Kiebel, 59, Elkhart, who complained of left shoulder pain and refused medical treatment. Eckert was ticketed for failure to yield right of way at a through highway.

• A motorcyclist was hurt after attempting to do a wheely at U.S. 20, east of Ind. 15 in Middlebury. The crash occurred at 8:36 p.m. Wednesday. Miguel Nunez, 28, Elkhart, was driving a 2001 Yamaha FZS and the throttle locked, causing him to lose control and fall off the motorcycle. He was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for abrasions on the arms, legs and back.

Theft/burglary reports

• Juan Alvarez, 306 E. Lincoln Ave., Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole a scooter at 11:58 a.m. Wednesday.

• Verna Hopson, 526 N. Eighth St., Goshen, told Goshen police two known persons entered her home with out permission and took her cell phone by force at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

• Debra McPeak, 2023 Eisenhower North Drive, Goshen, told Goshen police someone broke into her storage unit and stole some items around 8 a.m. April 1.

• A staff member of Courtyard of Goshen, 2400 College Ave., Goshen, told Goshen police someone took $20 from the trust fund of a resident at 2:03 p.m. Wednesday.

• Linda Borntrager, 1722 Roc Lane, Goshen, told Goshen police someone entered her shed and took a push mower sometime June 24.

• Terrence Ernsberger, 807 S. Fifteenth St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone took medication from his residence at 11:35 p.m. Wednesday.

Fraud reports

• Brandi N. Zepeda Vazquez, Goshen, reported a fraud to Goshen police around 3:59 p.m. June 25.

• Irma Sanchez, 19, 405 Broadmore Estates, Goshen, was arrested on a charge of theft by Goshen police at Kroger’s, 209 Chicago Ave., Goshen, at 10:32 p.m. Wednesday. She allegedly stole fireworks and was incarcerated at the Elkhart County jail.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Maria Tovar, 1107 Sander Ave., Goshen, told Goshen police someone damaged her neighbor’s door and about problems with neighborhood children at 11:40 a.m. Wednesday.

• Dorothy Waller, 507 Cross St., Goshen, reported criminal mischief to her property at 5:13 p.m. Wednesday to Goshen police.

• Brandon Seitz, 712 S. Fourteenth St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone spray painted his fence at 8:06 p.m. Wednesday.

Traffic arrests

• David Najera, 27, 1015 Beaver Lane, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of operating a vehicle with a suspended driver’s license as a habitual violator for life during a traffic stop in the 800 block of W. Pike St., Goshen, at 8:39 p.m. Wednesday. He was incarcerated at the Elkhart County jail.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income. How do you feel about the new lunch program?
