ESCD officer runs light, hits car

An Elkhart County police vehicle was involved in a two-vehicle crash Monday in Goshen.

Sheriff’s Capt. Jim Bradberry said the collision happened at 4:54 p.m. at the intersection of Pike and Second streets. ESCD officer Kwau Kuntu was driving east on Pike and disregarded the red light at the Second Street intersection, Bradberry said. The police vehicle collided with a southbound Toyota Camry driven by Robin Haag, 58, Goshen.

No one was injured in the crash, according to Bradberry. Damage was estimated between $5,000 and $10,000 to both vehicles.

Bradberry said no disciplinary action has been taken against Kuntu at this point. He indicated the Sheriff’s Department’s driving review board will assess the incident sometime in July.

New Paris man airlifted

A driver was airlifted by helicopter to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne after suffering injuries in a single-vehicle crash Monday at C.R. 48, east of Ind. 13 in Ligonier.

The crash occurred at 3:40 p.m. Elkhart County police said the 2010 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Robert Lutes, 77, New Paris, left the road and hit a tree and utility pole. Lutes complained of pain to the back and numbness to his legs.

Lutes was listed in fair condition Wednesday night.

Three injured in wreck

Three people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday at C.R. 4 and Lovejoy Drive near Middlebury. The collision occurred at 5:26 a.m. Elkhart County police said a 2002 Ford Escape driven by Justice V. Ratliff, 22, Goshen, turned left directly in front of the 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Robert G. Scrogham, 36, Middlebury.

A passenger in Scrogham’s vehicle, 5-year-old Logan Scrogham, was transported to IU Health Goshen Hospital for treatment of abrasions on the forehead and left arm. Scrogham was treated for a broken right ankle. Ratliff was treated for injuries to the pelvis and lower abdominal pain and cited for failure to yield right of way at the intersection.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
