Leesburg bank robbed

— Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies are currently investigating the robbery of a Leesburg bank Friday afternoon.

Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department deputies were advised at 4 p.m. Friday of a bank robbery at the Leesburg branch of the Farmers State Bank located at 205 S. Main St., Leesburg. County detectives investigating the incident have stated that the suspect entered into the bank wearing a dark colored mask over his nose and mouth area.

Information collected at the scene depicted the suspect as a Caucasian male, approximately 6-foot to 6-foot-2 tall mid to late 50s, wearing a red ball cap.

He was described as having gray or white hair, with either a beard or goatee that came to a two-prong or fork-style points at his chin area. The suspect was wearing a blue t-shirt, dark colored cargo pants, and white and silver running shoes at the time of the robbery.

The suspect fled the bank and left in an unknown direction driving a silver or gray, early to mid-‘90s station wagon, possibly a Chevy Cavalier or Ford Escort.

The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash and did not display a weapon at the time of the robbery.

Stolen vehicle possibly connected to bank heist

Goshen police are currently investigating the theft of a vehicle that may have been used in a bank robbery in Michigan Wednesday.

According to Goshen police, someone stole a white 1978 Ford LTD from Pep Auto Sales, 1014 W. Pike St., Goshen, at approximately 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. That vehicle was reportedly located Thursday morning by an Elkhart police officer at 1205 Georgia Blvd., Elkhart. Police indicated that the car is believed to have been used in a bank robbery in Edwardsburg, Mich., Wednesday and is being processed for evidence. A report for auto theft was taken and the responding officer has shared the available information about this incident with both the Elkhart and Edwardsburg police.

Homeless man nabbed on railroad charge

A 20-year-old homeless man was arrested by Goshen police at 10:33 a.m. Thursday in the 900 block of East Madison Street on a charge of unauthorized use of a railroad right-of-way. According to police, Davis M. Abbott was observed on railroad property riding a train car Thursday morning. Davis was apprehended and incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail.

Crash reports

Three people were injured in two automobile crashes responded to by Goshen police Tuesday:

• A four-vehicle, chain reaction collision injured a driver shortly before 1 p.m. near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Third Street.

Police reported that a 2007 Chrysler Seebring driven by Tarrah Eggers, 24, Elkhart, rear-ended a 2012 Kia Motors Sportage driven by Bryan R. Fisher, 31, Goshen, with the Kia then colliding with the rear of a 2003 Mazda Familia driven by Anthony W. Borntrager, 38, Middlebury. The impact caused the Mazda to strike the rear of a 2007 Kia Motors Optima driven by John R. Nisley, 72, Goshen.

Eggers suffered shoulder/collarbone pain as a result of the crash. She was transported to IU Health Goshen Hospital by a friend.

• A two-vehicle collision injured two people shortly before 2:30 p.m. at Riverside Boulevard and Clinton Street.

According to the police report, Frankie R. Ornatowski, 26, was driving a 1997 Chrevrolet Blazer and pulled into the path of a 2005 Cadillac CTS driven by Juana Gonzales, 29, Goshen.

Gonzalez suffered an arm abrasion as a result of the crash. A passenger in the Cadillac, Elizabeth Lopez, 9,Goshen, suffered leg pain.

• Middlebury police are looking for information connected to a hit and run that took place Friday afternoon involving a silver Buick SUV at the intersection of Ind. 13 and Warren Street in Middlebury. The Buick reportedly sustained damage to the rear end. Anyone with information connected to the incident is urged to contact the Middlebury Police Department.

Theft/burglary reports

• Jamie Johnson, Goshen, told Goshen police her bike was stolen while parked at Subway, 301 W. Pike St., Goshen, at 11:31 a.m. Thursday.

• A 13-year-old juvenile was arrested by Goshen police at 4:12 p.m. Thursday while at the Meijer Store, 4522 Elkhart Road, Goshen, on a charge of theft. The juvenile was taken to the police department for processing and released to a guardian on a memorandum to appear in court.

• Jose Gonzales, 1809 Roc Lane, Goshen, filed a report with Goshen police at 7 p.m. Thursday indicating his home had been burglarized.

• Bonnie Long, 605 N. 7th St. filed a report with Goshen police at 8 a.m. Thursday indicating a grill had been stolen from her property.

• Wayne Shrock, Goshen, filed a report with Goshen police at 9:40 p.m. Thursday indicating his son’s bicycle had been stolen.

• Joshua Webber, Goshen, filed a report with Goshen police at 9 p.m. Thursday indicating someone entered his locked vehicle while parked at 245 Chicago Ave., Goshen, and removed several items.

• Paul Shane Schmidt, 42, 405 Maple Ct., Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police at 2:59 a.m. Friday in the 700 block of West Lincoln Avenue on a charge of unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle. He was booked into the county jail.

• Jason L. Mast, 12767 York Hills Drive, Middlebury, filed a report with Elkhart County police at 10:33 a.m. Wednesday indicating someone broke into his pole barn and stole several items between 1:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

• Samuel Zapata, 2432 Frances Ave., filed a report with Elkhart County police at 11:25 a.m. Wednesday indicating someone stole screw guns, a scaffold, extension cords and drywall tools from 4216 Basswood Drive, Goshen, between 4 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. Wednesday.

• Jorge Moreno, 57804 C.R. 13, Elkhart, filed a report with Elkhart County police at 2:31 p.m. Wednesday indicating entered his home between 6 a.m. and 2:10 p.m. Wednesday and stole cash, passports and social security cards.

Fraud reports

• Heather Turner, 111 E. Jefferson St., Goshen, filed a report with Goshen police at 2 p.m. Thursday indicating someone used her Interra Debit Card without her knowledge or permission on July 1.

• Shelby Eiermann, 1902 Greenwood Drive, Goshen, filed a report with Goshen police at 3 p.m. Tuesday indicating several fraudulent charges had been made from her bank account.

Assault/battery reports

• A 17-year-old male was found to have been battered on Concord Valley Drive, south of Maple Valley Drive, at 12:50 p.m. Wednesday. The male was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the incident.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Robert Craig, Goshen, filed a report with Goshen Police at 4 p.m. June 20 indicating a rental property at 212 Crescent St., Goshen, had been damaged.

Traffic arrests

• Ponciano Camacho, 52, South Bend, was arrested by Goshen police at 4:53 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Main and Madison on charges of operating a motor vehicle while never having received a license and possession of a counterfeit government-issued ID.

• Joel Pedraza, 34, Elkhart, was arrested by Goshen police at 12:50 a.m. Friday in the 1900 block of Elkhart Road, Goshen, on charges of false reporting, resisting law enforcement and driving a motor vehicle while a habitual traffic offender. He was booked into the county jail.

Alcohol/drug arrests

• Travis Faulkner, 27, 71660 C.R. 37, Syracuse, was arrested by Elkhart County police at 10:48 a.m. Thursday on a charge of public intoxication after police were called to 12855 C.R. 50, Syracuse, to investigate a report of a domestic dispute.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
