Home safe swiped

---- — Someone took a safe from a man’s home south of Shipshewana Thursday. The loss was estimated at $10,000.

LaGrange County police said someone entered the Rainbow Lake residence of Freeman Miller and stole a safe and its contents from a bedroom closet. According to the police report, the safe was placed in a vehicle that was driven from the scene.

Police said the safe contained a large amount of gold and silver coins, rare and collectible coins and other personal and family items.

Authorities ask that anyone with information about the crime call the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department or Crime Stoppers.

Woman robbed at gunpoint

A 61-year-old woman told Elkhart County police she was robbed at gunpoint in her garage around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.

The robbery occurred in the 57000 block of Appleseed Court. Police said the robber stole a purse containing several credit cards, a small amount of cash and miscellaneous papers.

Elkhart County police said the robber was described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall and weighing around 130 pounds. He left the scene in a smaller dark-colored passenger car.

Crash reports

• A Mishawaka driver was hurt in a two-vehicle crash Thursday on U.S. 20 east of Ind. 15.

The crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. Elkhart County police said a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Zachary Hartman, 25, Goshen, collided with the rear of a 1995 Chevrolet Sonoma driven by Carl Picking, 47, Mishawaka.

Picking suffered neck and back pain as a result of the crash and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment.

Assault/battery reports

• LaGrange County police arrested Nathaniel Geering, 28, 11130 W. 750 North, Shipshewana, after Geering was allegedly involved in a fight with his sister around 9:20 a.m. Thursday. Geering allegedly put his hands around his sister’s neck and throat during the altercation.

Theft/burglary reports

• Ronald Davidhizar reported a burglary at 511 N. Fifth St. to Goshen police Thursday. Someone took tools from a garage. Also, a bag of tools belonging to one of Davidhizar’s employees was taken from a truck parked across the street.

• Ana A. Torres of Goshen reported a case of theft and burglary at 3325 Hackberry Drive to Goshen police Thursday.

• Jerrod Canfield of Elkhart told Goshen police Thursday that someone stole his cell phone while he was at work at Supreme Corp., 2581 Kercher Road.

• Luis Gambona told Goshen police Thursday that someone stole his home-made dual-axle utility trailer. The theft occurred on First Street.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Goshen police went to 411 W. Wilden Ave. Thursday after receiving a report that several juveniles were breaking windows at a vacant home.

• Goshen police arrested Austin L. Wiles, 20, homeless, Goshen, early Friday morning on a charge of criminal mischief. Police said Wiles damaged property at 1375 Lincolnway East.

• Greg Mercer, 53520 Baywater Place, Bristol, told Elkhart County police someone wrote graffiti on both his garage doors between 1:19 a.m. and 4:09 a.m. Monday.

Drug/alcohol arrests

• Damon Collins, 23, 29240 Kauffman St., Elkhart, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic stop around 8:10 p.m. Thursday in the 1000 block of East Waterford Street, Wakarusa. Collins was arrested on two Elkhart County warrants and on charges including possession of marijuana and driving while his driving privileges were suspended. He was incarcerated in the Elkhart County jail.

OWI arrests

The following motorists were recently arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated:

• Isaac Perez, 24, 65688 Woodbury Drive, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police after a traffic stop around 1:20 a.m. Friday in the area of Third and Washington streets. In addition to the OWI, Perez was arrested on a charge of driving while being a habitual traffic violator.

Traffic arrests

• Billy O’Dell, 34, 342 Joyce Court, Elkhart, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic stop around 8:45 p.m. Thursday at Pike and Third Streets in Goshen. O’Dell was taken into custody on a charge of driving while being a habitual traffic violator and incarcerated in the Elkhart County jail.
