Teen critically injured when thrown from vehicle

A teen driver was critically injured in a one-vehicle crash east of Goshen Friday night.

Dustin Schwartz, 16, Goshen, suffered head trauma and a head laceration in the crash, Elkhart County police reported. He was transported via Medflight to Memorial Hospital of South Bend, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday.

The mishap occurred around 10:35 p.m. on C.R. 36 east of C.R. 37. Police said Schwartz was driving a 1997 Ford Expedition and tried to pass a horse and buggy. The animal was spooked, police reported, and Schwartz swerved to miss the horse and buggy and lost control of the vehicle.

The Expedition went off the south side of C.R. 36 and into mud. The vehicle traveled back across C.R. 36 and went off the north side of the road, striking a mailbox, telephone box and ditch. The Expedition overturned, and Schwartz was ejected and struck a small tree. The vehicle came to rest upside down.

A passenger in the automobile, Luke Beechy, 16, Topeka, suffered chest and leg pain as a result of the crash and was transported to IU Health Goshen Hospital for treatment.

Schwartz was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, police reported.

Elderly woman robbed

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department officers are seeking the public’s help in finding a man who robbed Marietta Wilkerson, 84, at her home in the 28000 block of Bender Drive just north of Elkhart.

Police said Wilkerson returned home at 11:54 a.m. Saturday and when she parked her car in her garage a man approached her and demanded her purse.

Police said the man took the purse and then ran to a cream- or tan-colored compact car and left. The car was last seen headed north on C.R. 5.

The suspect was described by police as being a white male in his mid- to late-20s and wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and blue jeans.
