Police news for Jan. 17, 2013

Capt. Jim Bradberry with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department said police determined a knife wound to the abdominal area of a 17-year-old male at 60377 Missouri Ave., Goshen, was self-inflicted. The incident happened at 6:26 p.m. Tuesday. The male was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend for treatment and was able to speak with investigators, Bradberry said.

Threats reported

at Fairfield High School

The Elkhart County police school resource officer and other officers are monitoring an incident of threats to various students at Fairfield High School using social media that happened around 10 a.m. Dec. 24.

Charges have been sent to the prosecutor’s office for review, police said in a press release.

Police seek public’s

health with TV thefts

Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department is asking for the public’s assistance in providing information on burglaries from RV businesses this week, according to a release.

Officials at Redwood RV, 72440 Ind. 13, Syracuse, reported 15 flat-screen televisions were removed from their RV units. Southeastern Trailer Transport, 51818 Ind. 19, Elkhart, reported five to six televisions stolen from their RV units parked at the businesses.

The suspect or suspects stole televisions that were manufactured by Toshiba, Magnavox, Hisense and Legend and ranged in size from 26 inches to 55 inches, police report. Police are working with area law enforcement agencies and all the serial numbers from the televisions have been entered into the system to return as stolen if checked.

According to the release, Elkhart County police will increase patrols at these businesses.

Police said the public is asked to report anything suspicious around area business or anybody trying to get rid of televisions. Anyone with information, please call (574) 533-4151.

Crashes reported

The following crashes were reported by Goshen police:

• A two-vehicle crash Jan. 10 at Riverside Boulevard and Pike Street injured a driver and passenger.

The collision occurred around 6:30 p.m. Police reported a 1997 Saturn SL driven by Robert Rappatta, 31, Goshen, turned in front of a 2001 Toyota Highlander driven by Lavern Beachy, 59, Middlebury, and the vehicles collided.

Beachy and a passenger in the Toyota, Joan Beachy, 58, Middlebury, both suffered chest pain as a result of the crash, police reported.

• A driver was hurt in a two-vehicle collision Friday at Kercher Road and Messick Drive.

The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. Police reported a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Marco N. Camilo, 30, Goshen, collided with the rear of a vehicle driven by Robert M. Friedman, 47, Elkhart.

Friedman suffered hip pain as a result of the collision and was transported to IU Health Goshen Hospital.

• Gloria Croy of Goshen, told Goshen police someone struck her vehicle while it was parked in the 500 block of South Cottage Avenue, Goshen, and then left the scene at 7:25 a.m. Monday.

• Steven Hughes of Goshen, told Goshen police someone hit his Freightliner truck with another vehicle in the parking lot at Speedway, 1906 Lincolnway East, Goshen, at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Two drivers hurt in collision on Sunday

Two drivers were injured in a two-vehicle collision Sunday on C.R. 18, west of C.R. 19, according to Elkhart County police. The crash occurred around 4:42 p.m. Police reported a 1991 Honda Accord driven by Johnathan Frank, 18, Goshen, crossed the center line and struck the passenger side of a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Stephenie Ward, 41, of Elkhart.

Frank was given a citation for driving too fast for weather conditions and transported to Memorial Hospital of South Bend for treatment of fractures to both legs as a result of the collision, according to police.

Ward suffered neck and head pain and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital.

Identity theft/fraud reports

• Dennis Yoder, 11359 C.R. 20, Middlebury, told Elkhart County police Tuesday someone opened Comcast service using his identity at an address in South Bend where he never lived between July and October.

Theft/burglary reports

• Joanne Streeter, 10208 S. Roosevelt, told Elkhart County police someone stole a laptop from 53586 C.R. 27, Bristol, between 1:25 and 4:25 p.m. Jan. 7.

• Johnathon Callahan, 22, 201 Crescent St., Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police on theft and placed in the Elkhart County Jail at 7:19 a.m. Tuesday.

• Robert E. Davis, 2400 College Ave., Goshen, reported to Goshen police someone stole $175 from his room around 2:05 p.m. Tuesday.

• Kosciusko County police arrested Landon John Lewis, 18, C.R. 650 East, Akron, on burglary to a residence at 2:56 a.m. Wednesday. According to Kosciusko County police, Lewis had been connected to at least four residential burglaries that recently occurred in Kosciusko County.

• Goshen police were called to Meijer, 4522 Elkhart Road, Goshen, regarding three males stealing alcohol from the store at 6:57 p.m. Monday. Officers were unable to locate the individuals.

• Chelcee Couthen, 105 W. Wilden Ave., Goshen, reported a possible burglary in progress to Goshen police at her residence. Her front door was open at 8:42 p.m. Monday. Officers searched the residence and determined no one was inside. Couthen did not find anything stolen.

• Andrew Morse, 613 College Ave., Goshen, told Goshen police someone burglarized his unlocked garage in the past two weeks.

• Elkhart County police found a male taking trash and scrap items out of a Dumpster at 21055 Protecta Drive, Bristol, at 7:31 a.m. Sunday. A methamphetamine glass pipe was reportedly found in the vehicle he was operating. Police are continuing with an investigation.

• A Bristol resident told Elkhart County police someone forced entry through the front door of his residence in the 53000 block of C.R. 17, Bristol, around 11:31 a.m. Friday and then fled the scene. Nothing appeared stolen, police reported.

• Employees of Arrowhead Popcorn, 2400 W. U.S. 20, LaGrange, told LaGrange County police Saturday someone entered the building through an unsecured south door, ransacked the office and stole an unknown amount of cash and other items. Security cameras were ripped off the walls. The case is under investigation by the LaGrange County sheriff’s Department.

• Two Warsaw men were arrested Monday on preliminary charges of burglary by Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department. Corey Hurst Ritchie, 24, Warsaw, was detained by homeowners Friday around 1:15 p.m. in the 8000 block of Syracuse/Webster Road, Syracuse, during an attempted burglary, according to a report from police. Kosciusko County police and North Webster police located items stolen from the home and transported Ritchie to Kosciusko County Jail.

According to police, Zackery Hernandez, 23, Arthur Street, Warsaw, was arrested Saturday in connection with the burglary. Ritchie’s bond was set at $50,000 and Hernandez’s bond was set at $10,000, according to police.

Vandalism/criminal mischief report

• Lisa Martinez, 509 Cross St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone entered her unlocked vehicle and poured bleach throughout the interior at 5:08 a.m. Tuesday.

Traffic arrests

• Martin Vazquez, 43, 1711 Frances Ave., Elkhart, was arrested by Goshen police in the 2900 block of Elkhart Road, Goshen, on a charge of driving with a suspended license at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday. Vazquez was released at the scene with a court date. Police said he had a fictitious registration plate on the car he was driving.

• Joshua Lopez, 19, 1013 N. Greene Road, of Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police in the 1100 block of Michigan Avenue, Goshen, on a charge of driving while his license was suspended with a prior conviction at 8:18 p.m. Monday. Lopez was released on a memorandum to appear in Goshen City Court.

• Stephany Celis, 19, 1004 Lantern Lane, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of driving while never licensed after being involved in a crash in the 800 block of Beaver Lane, Goshen at 9:51 a.m. Sunday. Celis was also cited for driving with false and fictitious plates and not having insurance. Celis was released after being given a date to appear in Goshen City Court.

• Lana Munoz-Estrada, 28, 205 S. Eighth St., Goshen, was arrested in the 100 block of Chicago Avenue by Goshen police on a charge of driving without obtaining a valid driver’s license and released at the scene with a court date at 12:41 a.m. Monday.

Drug/alcohol arrests

•  Tyler Maule, 30, North Webster, was stopped by Elkhart County police at 2:26 p.m. Tuesday for an alleged seatbelt violation in the area of U.S. 6 and Ind. 19 in Nappanee. Maule was reportedly found to not have a valid driver’s license and in possession of marijuana and controlled substance. Maule was incarcerated.

OWI arrest

•  Middlebury police arrested Steven M. Huys, 47, 26197 Heatherfield Drive, of Elkhart, on a charge of driving while intoxicated after a traffic stop at U.S. 20 and C.R. 29 at 12:03 a.m. Sunday. Huys was transported to the Elkhart County Jail.

Drug arrests/incidents

• A Goshen High School student was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of possession of marijuana, a class A misdemeanor, at 11:15 a.m. Monday. The student was released to a parent after signing a promise to appear.

• Donald Chilcutt, 72440 C.R. 29, Syracuse, told Elkhart County police someone dumped the remains of a methamphetamine lab on the side of the road near his home between 10 a.m. Jan. 5 and 11:02 a.m. Sunday.

• Darrell E. Moore told Elkhart County police he found trash from a methamphetamine lab on the side of the road on C.R. 27, south of C.R. 24, in Goshen around 8:02 a.m. Saturday. The Indiana State Police Meth Suppression Team was contacted to recover and dispose of the trash.

Ellis was stopped for a traffic stop at Dierdorff and Kercher Roads in Goshen for driving left of center and transported to the Elkhart County jail.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
