Elkhart police are investigating the shooting of a young man near the intersection of Chapman and Chester streets at 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to an Elkhart police report, officers were dispatched to the Chapman and Chester intersection when someone reported hearing gunshots. Police then received a call that a gunshot victim was at his home at 135 Chapman, about a block from Chester Street.
The victim, Mario Alberto Guerrero Ladesma, 23, was taken to Elkhart General Hospital and underwent surgery for his injury.
Elkhart detectives are investigating.

Shopper’s purse taken
A woman reported her purse was stolen while she was grocery shopping in Goshen Tuesday.
According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Luella Zimmerman, Elkhart, reported her purse was stolen at 2:45 p.m. while shopping at Kroger, 209 N. Chicago Ave., Goshen.
The incident is under investigation.
Car strikes buggy
An Elkhart driver reported a car-buggy accident near Nappanee Wednesday afternoon.
According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Eleanor Artley, 62, Elkhart, reported hitting a horse-drawn buggy at C.R. 11 near C.R. 48 at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday. The operator of the buggy left the scene.
The crash is under investigation.
Rape attempt reported
Officers with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department received a report early Friday of an attempted rape.
Sheriff’s officers reported that a 37-year-old woman called at 12:56 a.m. Friday to report that a man had tried to rape her at his home in Middlebury. The incident is under investigation.
A case of identity theft was reported to Goshen police this week.
Goshen police said Manuel Marin reported that someone used his person information to open an account with AT&T last November. The incident is under investigation.
Goshen police received a report of a threat made against a teacher earlier this month.
Police were told Thursday that a student at the Merit Learning Center threatened a teacher on April 22 at 3:30 p.m.
The incident is under investigation.
Man facing drug charge
Goshen police reported the arrest of a city resident on a drug possession charge early Friday.
Arrested was Randy Harris, 58, Goshen, on a charge of possession of methamphetamine. He was taken into custody in the 300 block of South Ninth Street in Goshen at 12:10 a.m. Friday.
According to a report by the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Anthony James Howard, 27, 724 Emerson St., Goshen, was stopped at 12:29 a.m. Thursday at C.R. 22 and C.R. 31 for driving left of center. The driver reportedly failed a blood-alcohol test and was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated as a misdemeanor. He was booked at the county jail.
Goshen police said Larry D. Troyer, 38, 418 Cross St., was stopped at Lincolnway East and Sander Street at 10 p.m. Wednesday. He was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, and booked at the county jail.
A Noble County resident was in serious condition Thursday after his motorcycle collided with a utility pole at 3:20 a.m. Wednesday at 0839 S. 500 East.
According to a report by the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, Theodore P. Rauh, 31, 1000 S. C.R. 500 East, Albion, was riding a 2000 Yamaha in the 800 block of C.R. 500 East but lost control and the machine hit a utility pole. The motorcycle traveled 61 feet past the point of impact and the driver was thrown 161 feet beyond the pole. Rauh was taken to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne for treatment of broken bones and internal injuries.
Police said the motorcycle was demolished.
Teen injured in crash
An Elkhart teen-ager was hurt in a one-car crash at 10 p.m. Wednesday north of the city.
According to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department, Allison E. Sailor, 17, Elkhart, was driving a 1997 Nissan Sentra south on C.R. 7, south of C.R. 4, when a dog ran into the roadway. The driver swerved to avoid the animal and the car went off the west side of the road and hit a tree, causing heavy front-end damage.
Sailor was taken to Elkhart General Hospital by Osolo Township ambulance for treatment of body pain.
Sheriff’s Cpl. Casey Lehman said the car was demolished.
Woman arrested on battery charge
According to a Goshen police report, Cassandra Moreland, 21, 1016 S. 16th St., was arrested at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday on a charge of domestic battery, a Class A misdemeanor. She was booked at the county jail.
Prescription drug taken
Goshen police received a report of theft of medicine at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.
John Fein, Wawaka, told city police someone removed prescription medicine from his parked car at 1212 Century Drive between 9 a.m. and noon Wednesday. No value was set on the loss.
