Police news for Dec. 16, 2013

Goshen police are searching for the people who committed an armed robbery at MC Sporting Goods Saturday night. Eleven people were bound with cable ties during the incident, according to police.

Officers were called to Market Centre in northwest Goshen around 8:12 p.m. They were met by store employees and customers who’d been at the business during the robbery.

Witnesses told police that three black males wearing masks that partially covered their faces entered the store with what appeared to be handguns. The robbers ordered everyone to the floor.

Eleven people, including two store patrons, were bound with cable ties during the robbery. No one was injured, according to police.

Prior to police arrival, the robbers fled from the store in a Dodge Neon. Police said the vehicle believed to be the one used in the crime was located in the area of Maple Court Apartments in Goshen. Investigators said a search of the area was conducted, evidence collected and witnesses interviewed.

Crash reports

• A snowplow driver was hurt when the vehicle went off a county road west of Nappanee Saturday.

The mishap occurred around 2:24 p.m. on C.R. 100 north of C.R. 52. Elkhart County police said Scott A. Decker, 52, Elkhart, was driving south in the snowplow when the passenger side of the vehicle went off the road. The snowplow slid into a ditch and rolled onto its side.

Decker suffered pain and a cut above his eye as a result of the crash. He was transported to Elkhart General Hospital.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Goshen police reported that multiple mailboxes were knocked over and destroyed in the Clover Trails area Saturday morning. Police said the damage most likely took place between 2 and 4 a.m.

Theft/burglary reports

• A Furnitureland employee reported a theft in progress around 10:15 a.m. Saturday. Scrap metal was being taken from an Ancon Construction trash bin at 2119 W. Wilden Ave., Goshen. The thieves left in a silver Chevrolet Impala before police arrived.

• Brandon Slabaugh, 24, 473 Brookside Manor, Goshen, was arrested by Goshen police after allegedly trying to shoplift at Meijer, 4522 Elkhart Road. Slabaugh was released on a promise to appear in Goshen City Court.
