Homicide unit investigates Elkhart death

Officers with the Elkhart Police Department Homicide Unit are investigating a death reported Sunday night.

Police were called to the area of Old Farm Apartments on the city’s south side around 7 p.m. after a man was found dead. Police were not releasing the name of the individual pending notification of family members.

Elkhart County Coroner John White said an autopsy was performed Tuesday.

“We were not able to find the cause of death,” White said. Toxicology and a microscopic tissue examination will have to be done by a forensic pathologist, he said.

According to police, the homicide unit investigates all deaths that require any follow-up. This includes homicides, suicides, accidental deaths, any deaths were there are unanswered questions or odd circumstances, industrial mishaps, etc.  

Crash reports

Several people were hurt in recent vehicle crashes:

• A driver was injured in a two-car collision at the intersection of Mishawaka Road and C.R. 7 in Elkhart Sunday. The crash occurred at 7:19 p.m. According to  Elkhart County police, a 1998 Ford Explorer driven by Sonfonias Perez, 33, Elkhart, collided with the 2008 Chrysler 300M driven by Jami Spry, 21, Bristol. Spry was transported to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment of neck and lower back pained.

Police said Perez was cited for never receiving a valid driver’s license.

• A driver was injured in a single-vehicle crash on C.R. 8, west of C.R. 21 in Bristol Sunday.

The crash occurred at 10:08 p.m. Elkhart County police said a 1993 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Duante Berry, 51, 1100 Malard Lane, Bristol, went off the south side of the road into a ditch and collided with multiple trees.

Berry suffered a fractured vertebrae and was transported to Elkhart General Hospital. He was later incarcerated at Elkhart County jail on a charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Berry was also cited for unsafe lane movement.

• Two people were injured in separate all-terrain vehicle crashes recently in Kosciusko County.

According to Indiana Department of Natural Resources staff, Dwight Dean, 59, Syracuse, was injured when his ATV overturned at 1278 W. Lake St., Warsaw, around 3:45 p.m. Saturday. According to Indiana conservation officers, Dean suffered neck pain and was transported to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Dean was not wearing any protective gear at the time of the crash, the DNR reported.

In another incident, Caitlan Paloian, 23, Rosemont, Ill., was injured when her ATV rolled over onto her while she was riding near Tri County Fish and Wildlife Area around 10:15 a.m. Sunday.

Paloian suffered a broken wrist and was later transported to IU Health Goshen Hospital for treatment. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to DNR staff.

Theft/burglary incidents

• Jeremy Barnes, 32, 410 E. Jefferson Apt. 3, Goshen,  was arrested by Goshen police at the intersection of Jefferson and Seventh streets after exiting CVS, 410 S. Main St., Goshen Sunday morning. He was arrested on charges of theft, possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia, and on warrants out of St. Joseph and Elkhart counties. He was incarcerated in the Elkhart County jail.

• Delilah Martinez of Goshen told Goshen police someone stole her purse from a grocery cart while she was shopping at Carniceria San Jose, 2124 Elkhart Road, Goshen around 4 p.m. Sunday.

• Rodney Silcox, 219 S. 29th St., Goshen, told Goshen police someone stole several long rifles and one gold wedding ring from his residence and truck between Thursday and Sunday.

• Arlen Eicher, 67203 Chadwick Court, Goshen, told Elkhart County police someone stole a sub-woofer, a stereo and amplifier from his 1997 Jeep Wrangler between 1 and 4 a.m. Monday.

Fraud report

• Carl Shinabarger of Bristol told Elkhart County police someone used his debit/card information to make fraudulent purchases at 6:30 a.m. May 24.

Vandalism/criminal mischief reports

• Goshen police were called to the residence at 1503 Westmoor Parkway, Goshen, to a rock thrown through the front window at 12:20 a.m. Monday.

Battery reports

• Staff at Bashor Children’s Home, 62226 C.R. 15, Goshen, told Elkhart County police a resident battered her while attempting to leave the office area at 1:30 p.m. May 22.

• Staff at Concord High School, 59117 Minuteman Way, Elkhart, told Elkhart County police of a battery between two 15-year-old females at 7:50 a.m. May 24. Both students obtained minor injuries, police said.

• Elkhart County police said an 11-year-old boy and a 12-year-old boy got into a verbal then physical altercation on a school bus en route to Heritage Intermediate School in Middlebury between 7 and 7:45 a.m. Friday.

Drug/alcohol incidents

• Robert John Kuempel III, 29, Vicksburg, Mich., was arrested by Goshen police in the 100 block of South Main Street Sunday afternoon on a charge of possession of marijuana. He was released on a memorandum to appear in court.

• Staff at Concord High School, 59117 Minuteman Way, Elkhart, told Elkhart County police a 15-year-old girl was in possession of three different controlled substances Friday.

• Jensen D. Frye, 19, was cited and released by Elkhart County police on a charge of possession of marijuana early Saturday at 507 W. Bristol St., Middlebury. Frye is scheduled to appear Magistrate Court.

OWI arrests

The following drivers were recently arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated:

• Mitchell Terry, 45, 1804 Tony Lane, Goshen, was arrested after his vehicle reportedly struck a fence and a parked car south of Irongate on Ind. 13, south of Ind. 120 in Middlebury, around 5 p.m. Monday. According to Elkhart County police, Terry fled the scene and was blocked by several passersby. He was incarcerated in the Elkhart County jail.

• Brittany A. Shook, 19, White Pigeon, Mich., was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic stop on C.R. 2, east of Ind. 13 in Middlebury at 12:50 a.m. Saturday. In addition to the OWI, she was also arrested on a charge of illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage.

• Maria Rodriguez, 49, 72833 C.R. 29 Lot 24, Syracuse, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a single-vehicle crash on C.R. 17, south of C.R. 38 near Goshen, around 6:55 a.m. Saturday. She was incarcerated in the Elkhart County jail.

• Gabriel Valdovinos Jr., 26, 2219 Benham Ave., Elkhart, was arrested by Elkhart County police after a traffic stop on C.R. 13 and Mary Street in Elkhart at shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday. He was also arrested on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana.

• Nepthali Campos, 23, 23922 Dahlia Court, Goshen, was arrested by Elkhart County police after traffic stop on C.R. 13, south of C.R. 18 in Elkhart around 8:52 p.m. Monday. In addition to the OWI, he was also arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana.

  • Police news: Several arrested on charges of drunken driving • Lori L. Ellis, 48, 12778 N. 300 East, Syracuse, was arrested by Goshen police on a charge of driving while intoxicated at 1:35 a.m. Sunday. Ellis was stopped for a traffic stop at Dierdorff and Kercher Roads in Goshen for driving left of center and transported to the Elkhart County jail.
