Police investigate several crashes

Police arrest Goshen man following three-vehicle crash

A Goshen man was arrested following a three-vehicle collision at 10:09 a.m. Monday in Goshen.

According to Elkhart County police, Charles E. Tippett Jr., 63, 623 S. Main St., Apt. 3, Goshen, was driving his vehicle south on Ind. 15, just south of U.S. 6, in a reckless manner.

Police indicated that southbound traffic on Ind. 15 had a stop sign and northbound traffic had the right of way due to construction in the area.

Tippett allegedly disregarded the stop sign and continued south on Ind. 15 into oncoming traffic, weaving all over the road and colliding with two northbound vehicles.

Tippett suffered minor bleeding to the head as a result of the collision.

The driver of the second vehicle, Leisa J. Kerlin, 38, 14106 Bonestead Road, Silver Lake, and third vehicle, Darrell B. Oldham, 69, 35600 183rd, Leavenworth, Kan., were both uninjured.

Following the collisions, police reportedly arrested Tippett on a felony charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

He was incarcerated at the Elkhart County Jail in lieu of a $10,000 bond.

One injured in rollover

A Cromwell man escaped from his vehicle before it went up in flames following a crash at 3:49 p.m. Tuesday in Syracuse.

According to Elkhart County police, Richard Rickard, 22, of Cromwell, was driving his vehicle east on South County Line Road when he fell asleep, causing his vehicle to exit the roadway to the north and flip over onto its top.

Police reported that Rickard was able to exit the vehicle, which then caught fire and was completely burned.

Rickard was transported to Goshen General Hospital for treatment of a concussion and broken nose.

The crash remains under investigation with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department.

Michigan woman injured in crash

A Sturgis, Mich., woman was injured when her vehicle exited the roadway at noon Wednesday in Concord Township.

According to Elkhart County police, Marycruz V. Cardoso, 18, 69830 Deer Road, Sturgis, Mich., was driving her vehicle southeast on C.R. 16, just southeast of Old Orchard Lane.

Police indicated that upon entering a curve in the roadway, a medium-sized animal entered the roadway in front of her, causing her to swerved to avoid hitting the animal.

Cardoso reportedly went into a clockwise yaw and left the right side of the roadway, striking an iron fence and damaging three brick pillars and two sections of the fence.

Cardoso complained of face pain as a result of the crash.
