Tornado touches down near Indianapolis

PLAINFIELD, Ind. — A band of storms containing heavy rains, lightning and gusting winds spawned at least one tornado near Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

A tornado touched down at about 2:30 p.m. local time in the Indianapolis suburb of Plainfield and destroyed at least three homes in the area, according to Hendricks County emergency managers. Police dispatchers also reported damage along Raceway Road near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Additional damage was also reported in the Speedway area including uprooted trees, damage to automobiles and debris blocking roadways. No injuries had been reported as of late Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

The storm headed into Indianapolis and crossed the north side of the city before plowing into its northern suburbs.

Flash flood and tornado warnings were in effect for nearby Madison, Marion and Hamilton counties.
