Board of Works grants relief to McKee's Pub

GOSHEN — The owner of McKee’s Irish Pub won’t have to go through the messy and costly installation of a 1,000-gallon grease interceptor — but he still has other requirements to follow.

Owner Jason Grounds came before the Goshen Board of Works and Public Safety to request relief from fats, oils and grease control requirements set forth in city ordinance. He brought Jacob Osowski, operations manager for A&R Wastewater Management, to explain how the restaurant’s drains appeared clean of grease.

“We have camera-ed the lines in the building, and the lines were extremely clean,” Osowski said.

It also would be extremely expensive to separate the restaurant’s line from the other neighboring businesses because of a combined sewer line, according to Osowski. With this in consideration, Board of Works members approved relief, contingent on a mechanical grease trap able to handle the flow from the kitchen, including the dishwasher, being installed on the property.

“It would be nearly impossible and very costly to separate these drain lines internally to install a 1,000-gallon grease interceptor,” city fats, oil and grease inspector Tom Walters wrote in a memorandum to the board. “It is the City Utilities recommendation that the Board of Public Works and Safety approve McKee’s Irish Pub to install and properly maintain a mechanical grease trap capable of capturing all flows from the dishwasher, three-bay sink and floor drains located in the kitchen.”

Contracts awarded

In other business, board members awarded contracts for two service agreements for 2013.

Middlebury Electric was awarded the electrical maintenance for wastewater and water utilities at a cost of $26,950, which was the lowest bid received.

L&M Electric was awarded the contract for the electrical maintenance service for the city’s traffic signals, lighting and city buildings at a cost of $19,936, which was also the lowest bid received.

In other matters, the board:

• Approved leaves of absence for city employee Douglas Beall and assistant fire chief Jim Ramer.

Beall will have an indefinite unpaid leave of absence resulting from an on-the-job injury. Ramer will have up to six days a year for training and other school board-related activities, a result of his November election to the Goshen Community School Board of Trustees.

Ramer will have no reduction in compensation and benefits during this leave.

• Amended an agreement with The Willows LP to change how the construction of a east-west water main extension would be funded. According to a memorandum from city attorney Larry Barkes, Wal-Mart will be purchasing real estate in the affected area and may construct the desired extension. If not, funds from an escrow account will be used to complete the project.

• Approved a city contract with Bills Heating to replace the old heater in the Water Department’s high service pump room for a cost of $1,651.65. The work is to be completed by Dec. 31.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income.
