Elkhart County jobless rate drops to 5.8 percent


— Elkhart County’s jobless rate dropped below 6 percent last month, according to figures released Monday by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The March unemployment rate for the county was estimated at 5.8 percent, compared to the February estimate of 6.2 percent and the March 2013 figure of 8.3 percent.

The county labor force numbered 94,726 last month, with 5,475 people out of the work. In February, 5,872 people were jobless in a job force numbering 94,422. The labor force numbered 93,168 in March of last year, with 7,756 people unemployed.

By comparison, the U.S. unemployment rate was estimated at 6.8 percent for March, 7 percent for February and 7.6 percent for March 2013. Indiana’s jobless rate stood at 6.3 percent in March, 6.9 percent in February and was estimated at 8.2 percent for March 2013.
