As summer heats up, locals will be looking for ways to cool off and a new snow cone business will offer that opportunity.
Goshen entrepreneurs Ned Starnes and Troy Swartzendruber have teamed up to buy a Kona Ice snow cone truck franchise.
The business, which operates out of a brightly colored tropical-themed truck, serves flavored shaved ice. The company is headquartered in Florence, Ky.
“We looked at it, Troy’s my neighbor, Troy always wanted to be an entrepreneur, this came up,” said Starnes, who owns several ice machines. “We talked to different people around the country and this is very successful.”
Swartzendruber who still works as a custom application sales manager said the Kona truck is a nice side business.
“It’s kind of therapeutic to some extent, where you come out here and sometimes at work you’re faced with a lot of difficult situations, maybe some people that aren’t real excited to be at work and here you get to come out here and serve a bunch of smiling children and their families,” he said. “So it’s kind of a nice little change sometimes.”
Starnes said Kona Ice was actually referred to him by his accountant, who had a customer that owned a truck in another city.
According to Starnes, the truck and franchise fees were about $100,000.
“Not a cheap venture,” he said, “but the payoff should be pretty quick.”
The two began serving their frozen treats earlier this month at First Friday in Warsaw and the reception was well-received. Customers receive a cup of shaved ice and then add on flavors from a dispenser on the side of the truck. An employee can also add the flavors for the customer.
“90 percent of the time, the kids want to do it themselves,” Starnes said.
