By day Dee Conn is a teacher. At night she is a retailer.
Conn is operating School Yard Sale at 120 N. Main St., Suite 400, Goshen, a store that sells teaching supplies on consignment.
“I teach second grade at Model Elementary and always wanted a teacher’s store in Goshen so I wouldn’t have to drive so far,” Conn said.
Her customers are teachers who want to create new and meaningful educational projects for their students.
“You can come in here and change with the times in an affordable way,” Conn said.
Not only do teachers consign items to the shop and pick up new items, but parents also stop in to buy.
“I have parents coming in looking for educational items to keep their kids busy at home and I applaud that,” Conn said.
Other customers are pre-school teachers, education students and student teachers.
She has arranged her store by theme, so there is a large assortment of language arts items in boxes along one wall, math and science sections and groupings by projects.
On one shelf there are math games. On another shelf for science education there are solar system, backyard science and butterfly boxed projects.
There is even a large box of cardboard toilet paper rolls. Those are free for teachers needing a couple dozen items for craft projects for a room full of students.
Scissors, glue pens and other classroom staples are stored in baskets.
Conn relies on local teachers dropping off whatever they are done with and want to offer to others, so stock changes rapidly.
“I am never in control of what comes in and I am always surprised at what comes in on a daily basis,” she said.
And teachers who want specific items can obtain them through a catalog Conn has and uses for ordering new teaching supplies. Ordered supplies are delivered to a teacher’s home.
The store has a Facebook page and is open Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The store’s phone number is 574-536-5233 and its website is located at schoolyardsale.org.
