Goshen couple open market

Couple spends three years renovating building on city's east side

GOSHEN

A Goshen couple’s dream of owning a small grocery store has been realized.

Aracelia and Arturo Marin have opened Eastgate Market at 922 E. Lincoln Ave.

“Four years ago we saw this building and thought maybe some day we could buy this building,” Arturo said. Six months later they made the purchase.

The building was formerly a billiard hall. Arturo and Aracelia were working full-time jobs at the time and spent their evenings and weekends over three years remodeling the building into the clean, bright grocery it is today.

“This looked horrible,” Arturo said as he stood at the front of the store and remembered back to the worn facility he and Aracelia purchased. Now there are sharp rows of colorful grocery boxes and cans, a fresh fruit area, a vegetable cooler and at the back of the store a meat and deli area.

“We call it a convenient grocery,”Arturo said of his store’s concept. “We are not Walmart. We are not Meijer.”

Instead, the couple have stocked the store with items most used to prepare meals.

“We try to have a little bit of everything, but we are still working on it,” Arturo said of the selections.

The couple are stocking items that are popular in American and Latin dishes.

“We opened the store for everybody,” Arturo said. “Everybody is welcome.”

Besides food items, there are household staples, including laundry detergents, cleaners, shampoos and toiletries.

They also sell cell phone cards.

Aracelia, who is a Goshen native and well versed in the city’s infamous traffic delays caused by trains, said the store’s location east of the railroad crossing on Lincoln is an advantage.

“People have told me ‘I am glad you are here because now I don’t have to wait on the train for a gallon of milk,’” she said.

The store is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
